100% of Andy's sale proceeds will go back into the re-training and re-homing of other Standardbreds exiting racing.

Andy is a beautifully marked bright bay five year old Standardbred Pacer gelding whose dam was imported in foal from Canada by Cold Mountain Stud. He was born there in May 2009 and is by WESTERN IDEAL (US) and out of AMBRO SAKER CA. He was purchased by Steven Towns and Maxine Ellison in 2012 as a colt. He raced as Ideal Guy and won one race out of 43 starts and was retired sound. He underwent extensive health checks before starting his re-training as a saddle horse in 2014.

Andy was donated by Steven and Maxine to the Unharnessed Potential Project in 2014 so that, in partnership with the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre, Horses and People Magazine could document the entire process of re-training a Standardbred racehorse into a riding horse. Andy has shown untapped aptitude for many equestrian pursuits. The project was made possible thanks to the generous support of many sponsors.

Andy's re-training with Alistair McLean, Senior Trainer at the Australian Equine Behaviour Centre has been documented and is detailed in the series of articles that you can read on this website: Unharnessed Potential, Ideal Guy's Track to Hack Story. His responses - transitions, turns and lateral work are well consolidated. He has done jumping and cross country training. His transitions into trot and canter without pacing are well established although, in general, his canter work needs time to develop as he develops and becomes stronger in carrying a rider. He has undergone all re-training barefoot, he is in good health and a pre-purchase vet check is welcome.

You can find many photographs, some video and details on his Facebook Page's Timeline. Andy performed at Equitana Melbourne in November 2014 in front of a packed audience during Dr Andrew McLean's demonstration of the Training and Re-Training Principles, you can find a video of his canter work on the page. After Equitana he underwent a further 3 months of training.

Trainer Alistair McLean says:

"Andy is a very unique Standardbred boasting both, wonderful elastic movement with the looks to match. He has an exceptionally trainable temperament due to his sensitive but sensible nature. He is very much a one person type of horse, but a horse that will give you his all given the right combination. Andy needs a rider who can ride big movement and someone who is willing to be patient with his training. Andy could do very well in any discipline given the right opportunity.

"I wish both Andy and his new owner the best for the future and that they both succeed in whatever discipline they choose."

If you are interested and you can secure a long-term home for Andy, offer him regular exercise, safe and spacious living quarters, and you are committed to continuing his education please contact Maxine Ellison on 0417 436 537
