New Zealand's top eventers are doing battle against the best in the world at the prestigious Aachen International Festival in Germany this evening (Fri NZ time). The hendra virus has claimed another horse's life. The New South Wales Department of Primary Industries says a second horse has been euthanased at a property at Wollongbar, near Lismore in the state's north. The animal had been kept in the same paddock as another horse which succumbed to the disease late last month. The property is still under quarantine. A vet with the department, Ian Roth, says the infection was not a great surprise. "It's not really unexpected because those two horses were companions," Mr Roth said....

A runaway horse, who had escaped from his paddock near the busy town of Meppen in Germany, galloped along a main road and triggered a speed camera before being caught, thankfully unhurt, by his relieved owner! 36 Horses to be Assessed for Hendra at Kuranda Property

Biosecurity Queensland and Queensland Health officers are working at the Kuranda property again today after a Hendra virus infection was confirmed yesterday afternoon. Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer Dr Rick Symons said officers were further assessing this situation - at this stage we understand there are 36 horses on the property. "These officers will continue to work with the owners today to assess these animals and to trace their contact with any other horses."...
Feeding Mares in the Final Stages of Pregnancy

The last trimester of pregnancy in the horse sees the foetus increase in size by around 75%, with massive deposits of protein and minerals being made to put together the musculoskeletal structure of the soon to be born foal. While mares appear to be able to reproduce even under the harshest conditions, careful nutritional management of the late pregnant mare will give you the best chance of having strong, well grown foals that grow well in a structurally sound manner during the critical first year of their life....
