This year’s Saddleworld Dressage Festival sees the return of the “Education Day” on Sunday December 11. New Zealand Dressage is riding a high with more international success, this time in the FEI World Dressage Challenge after a nail-biting finish at Taupo late Tuesday. New Zealand, comprising Anna McIntyre (Tauranga) on Cavort, Victoria Wall (Albany) on Astek Gymnast, Susan Tomlin (Palmerston North) Giusto MH and Abbie Deken (Taranaki) on KH Ambrose, won the zone 9 teams competition, heading off determined challenges from China, Chinese Taipei, the Phillipines and Hong Kong, and made a clean sweep of all seven sections. ... With under a week to go to the Global Champions Tour final round in Abu Dhabi (24 - 26 November), excitement is at fever pitch and speculation is rife about whether Australian Edwina Tops-Alexander (pictured) or German Ludger Beerbaum will win this years series. The Qld Working Cow Horse Club (QWCHC) held a two day event on the 19-20 November at the Caboolture Indoor arena. Saturday featured a two handed snaffle bit cutting competition, followed by a wild card team penning event and all the fun of NBHA Barrel Racing at night. Eurodressage has reported that Isabell Werth officially retired her Olympic mount, Satchmo, from competition in a special ceremony at the CDI Stuttgart on Saturday 19 November 2011. The horse is still completely fit and healthy, however, Werth feels there is no need to pressure the now 17-year old Hanoverian to perform another show season. Werth has seven Grand Prix horses waiting at home, so she is ready to give them a big future in the international Grand Prix show ring and retire her star horse. ... A super day of Competition was held at Sydney Showjumping Club on Sunday 20 November. Courses were designed by Mark Atkins and rode very well. Many riders elected to bring their younger horses out and some with great promise went around, including Jamie Kermond's talented big youngster Yandoo Constellation (pictured). Over the weekend the Queensland Tentpegging Championships were held at Kalbar Showgrounds, where conditions were hot on and off the field! Tentpegging is thought to have originated in India, where mounted soldiers would gallop through enemy camps, removing the tent pegs with their lances and swords. They would be followed by more mounted soldiers who took advantage of the surprise and havoc caused by collapsed tents and a confused enemy. Ludger Beerbaum claimed the honours for Germany today in the fifth leg of the Rolex FEI World Cup™ Jumping Western European League series on his home turf at Stuttgart.
