96th Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale Underway in Sydney

 

Buyers parted with $27,426,000 for 129 yearlings on Day One of the 2012 Inglis Australian Easter Yearling Sale , with plenty of fierce bidding taking place under the famous Moreton Bay Fig, particularly in the middle section of the market.

“The $160,000 median recorded today is very similar to that recorded the last three years, with 55 yearlings selling from $100,000 to $200,000 today,” Inglis Managing Director Mark Webster said after the day’s proceedings.

“Clients from New Zealand, Ireland, United Kingdom, South Africa, Hong Kong, Singapore, Macau, Japan and all over Australia feature on the buyers list, making the best of this opportunity to buy into the best bred and conformed yearlings that Australia and New Zealand have to offer here at Easter,” Webster added.

James Bester and Demi O’Byrne led the buyers list for Day One, taking home five lots for $2,585,000 including Lot 94 Fastnet Rock-Catreign colt for $1,000,000 the highest price recorded on the day.

From young stakes winning Tale of the Cat mare Catreign by leading sire Fastnet Rock the colt (pictured) was bred by Robert and Barbara McClure of Morning Rise Stud from Victoria, and offered from the draft of Henry Field’s Newgate Farm.

Newgate Farm acquired 75% of Group One winning Easter graduate Foxwedge late last week from Dr Edmund Bateman, who was back at Easter today with his agent James Harron, with the duo securing the second highest priced lot on the day; Lot 40 Encosta de Lago-Amelia’s Dream filly from Edinglassie Stud for $910,000.

Kevin Maloney’s Segenhoe Thoroughbreds made their presence felt at Newmarket purchasing three well-bred and conformed fillies for a total of $1,215,000.

Fastnet Rock led the sires list at the end of the day, with 14 of his 19 offered progeny selling at an average of $373,929, just nosing out Redoute’s Choice, whose eight yearlings sold at an average of $370,000.

The progeny of Encosta de Lago were also popular with 17 finding new owners at an average of $251,765, while eight yearlings by More Than Ready sold at an average of $226,250.

Northern Meteor heads the first season sires, with all five offered sold at an average of $161,000.

A further 333 yearlings are set to be offered at Newmarket over the remaining two days of the 96th annual Easter Sale, representing the cream to the regions yearling crop.

“Black Caviar’s half-sister [Lot 200] to be offered tomorrow is obviously one the highlight yearlings to be offered anywhere in the world in the last twelve months, but as at every Easter Sale there will be Group One winners sold across all budgets in the coming two days,” Webster pointed out.
