Published on Thursday, June 28, 2012 in General

Weanlings by Australian Champion Sire elect Fastnet Rock provided the highlights on a remarkable opening day’s trade at the 2012 Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock Sale in Sydney, where the average price rose 55% from last year.

$3,772,750 was traded on 154 Select Session weanlings at Newmarket today, representing a 55% increase in average and 75% increase in median on the corresponding figures recorded twelve months ago. The clearance rate recorded was also a very healthy 80%.

“Vendors that brought quality offerings to today’s sale were well rewarded by the strong local and international buying bench assembled, who no doubt are well aware of the strong demand for Australian bred thoroughbreds in the yearling sale ring,” said Inglis Bloodstock Director Jonathan D’Arcy.

“The progeny of Fastnet Rock have been in high demand at all of Inglis’ sales this year and that continued today, but it was also great to see a number of those weanlings that featured in the TVN First Season Sire Showcase overnight sell well today,” D’Arcy said.

Coolmore Stud’s Fastnet Rock colt from Group 2 winner Bird Of Fire had plenty of admirers at Newmarket and when he stepped into the ring as Lot 22 early in the day there was fierce bidding on the youngster. Five individual’s made bids above $200,000, with the colt finally fetching the highest weanling price in Australasia this year when selling to J Scott of Victoria for $270,000.

The top priced filly of the day was also by Fastnet Rock, with Lot 172 out of stakes winner Sarah Vee sold by Coolmore Stud to Musk Creek Farm from Victoria for $250,000. Musk Creek have had great success with the progeny of Fastnet Rock, having pinhooked this year’s Melbourne Premier Yearling Sale topper as a weanling to sell for $500,000 as a yearling at Oaklands in March.

The progeny of Fastnet Rock’s Group 1 winning son Wanted were also hot property in the sale ring today, with his two weanlings that featured in the TVN First Season Sire Showcase, Lot 198 ex Tiger Storm & Lot 64 ex Evening Charmer, selling for $100,000 and $80,000 respectively.

Other weanlings that featured in the showcase that were offered today include Middlebrook Valley Lodge’s I Am Invincible-Dublin Me Bet filly, Lot 61 , which was snapped up for $52,000 and Lustre Lodge’s Duporth-Snow Queen colt, Lot 182 , that was purchased for $90,000.

Coolmore Stud finished the opening day of the three day sale as the leading vendor by aggregate, having sold 23 Select Session weanlings for a total of $980,000. Other vendors to clear more than $150,000 in sales today were Edinglassie, Patinack Farm, Broadwater Thoroughbreds, Middlebrook Valley Lodge, Eliza Park, Amarina Farm and Fairhill Farm.

Fairhill Farm are well known for selling Group 1 Manawatu Sire’s Produce Stakes winner Choice Bro at this sale in 2010, and there was plenty of interest in their High Chaparral-Clevedon colt, Lot 41 , which was finally knocked down to Mark & Shelley Treweek’s Lyndhurst Farm from New Zealand for $82,000.

“Very pleasing to see a wide range of purchasers on the buyers list today, from pinhookers and breeders to owners, agents and trainers,” D’Arcy added.

Musk Creek Farm finished the session as the leading individual buyer, purchasing six weanlings for $397,000 by sires such as Fastnet Rock, Northern Meteor, Dane Shadow, Nicconi, Not A Single Doubt and Denman.

New Zealand pinhookers have had great success buying from the Inglis Australian Weanling and Bloodstock Sale and buyers from across the Tasman took home 16 weanlings for a total spend of $663,000 today.
