Published on Friday, December 6, 2013 in General

The Belgian Equestrian Federation has confirmed that showjumper Nick Motmans died on Thursday 5 December, as a result of injuries suffered during a fall from his horse, reports horseandhound.co.uk.

He was training in Lanklaar, Belgium, on Monday 2 December when he fell.

The 27-year-old rider suffered a head injury and was taken to hospital in Genk. He underwent surgery and was placed into a coma.

The Belgian Equestrian Federation said they had lost a talented young rider with a bright future. Riders will be wearing a “sign of mourning” at competitions this weekend.

Nick was a Derby speciallist and a regular visitor to the UK, where he is a familiar face at Hickstead. This summer he finished 6th in the Stoner Jewellers Vase with Ti Amo.

He finished 3rd in the Hickstead Derby in 2012 and 3rd in the Flanders Derby at Lummen in 2011, riding Aladdin St Ghyvan.
