Biosecurity Protocol Release from QHIA

Published on Monday, October 14, 2013 in General

Horse Event Organisers met in Brisbane on the 2 October 2013 to discuss Biosecurity at Horse Gatherings. There was a renewed push to consolidate documents, focus horse organisations and owners on good biosecurity/ horse health and increase awareness of protocols surrounding emergency animal disease occurrences.

The group (comprised of representatives from Breed Societies, Chamber of Agricultural Show Societies, numerous peak Equestrian Sports Organisations and several private veterinarians) endorsed the following points:

1.It is essential that all event organisers have a current Biosecurity Plan in place to enhance already established Risk Management Practices.

2.All attendees at all horse events be required to supply a horse health declaration that is for all horses (including non-competing), as well as the PIC of most recent location of any respective horse and all relevant contact details.

3.It was further acknowledged that in line with advice from the Queensland and New South Wales Governments, vaccination is the single most effective way of reducing the risk of Hendra Virus in Horses.
