Can You Help Oreo the Miniature Pony?

Published on Wednesday, December 26, 2012 in General

Oreo is a fairly typical example of the horses and ponies who find themselves in the care of Quest Equine Welfare Inc, although they do not usually come in such small packages! Oreo is an eleven month old Miniature Pony who was surrendered into Quest’s care by his owner due to difficulties she was experiencing in providing Oreo with appropriate care.

Oreo presented with a pre-existing injury to his eye which was sustained some time ago. Veterinary opinion is that the initial injury could have been caused by any number of events… anything from walking into a stick, to having a grass seed embedded in his eye. Whatever the cause, the eye had ulcerated and then the ulcer had eventually ruptured, leaving the eye 'deflated' and sunken in appearance. Oreo is now permanently blind in this eye, but at this stage, the Vet sees no reason for its removal. It is not causing him any pain or discomfort. Unfortunately the time is long past when it could be treated and his sight potentially saved.

Oreo also presented with extremely neglected hooves, a heavy worm burden, un-gelded, and infested with lice. All of these conditions are very standard in the equines who find themselves at Quest’s Shelter.

The little man is utterly charming. Initially very timid, he makes progress daily, and courageously takes baby-steps towards feeling more confident around us humans. His base nature is very ‘soft’ and gentle, and he has not a mean bone in his body.

At this stage Oreo has two lovely sponsors, however, Quest do still need sponsorhip support for this gorgeous little boy's rehabilitation. The weekly amount contributed can be as little as $5. Sponsorship contributions are 100% tax deductible and are a crucial source of funding that directly impacts upon the number of needy equines that QEW is able to accept into care. Please visit QEW’s Horse Sponsorship page for more details.

Oreo may be the tiniest horse that Quest has ever had in care, but he is by no means less 'important' than any other. He has his whole life ahead of him and we look forward to ensuring that it's a long, healthy, and happy one!

Quest Equine Welfare is a registered Australian charity dedicated to providing quality welfare services to sick, injured, abused, abandoned, and neglected equines, (horses and donkeys).
