Cavalia Raises Its Signature White Big Top in Sydney for 15 May Premiere

Published on Wednesday, April 24, 2013 in General

One of the world’s largest touring tents is now erected at the Entertainment Quarter in Moore Park. The fantastical White Big Top has become home to Cavalia: A Magical Encounter Between Human and Horse, opening in the state capital of New South Wales on May 15, 2013.

The White Big Top is an immense structure, gleaming white with fairy-tale spires towering 10-stories high. This morning, it rose from the ground in mere minutes in preparation for the Sydney season of the multi-disciplinary theatrical production created by Normand Latourelle, one of the co-founders of Cirque du Soleil.

Spanning more than 2,440-square-metres, Cavalia’s White Big Top accommodates a colossal 50-metre-wide stage, behind which a constantly changing digital background is projected onto a 60-metre-wide screen, drawing spectators into dream-like virtual environments.

The gigantic stage area provides equestrian stars room to gallop at times completely free and express themselves in all their grace, strength, and beauty. Over the past decade, Cavalia’s White Big Top has graced the skylines of the largest North American and European cities.

Weighing more than 50 tons, the White Big Top has more than 6,630-square-metres of canvas and seven trailers are required to transport it. It is the second-largest touring tent in the world – surpassed only by the one housing Cavalia’s sister production, Odysseo.

“We are delighted with our new home here in Sydney,” said Normand Latourelle, Cavalia’s Founder and Artistic Director. “It is quite exhilarating to finally present this internationally acclaimed theatrical production to a country which has such a great affinity with both the performing arts and the horse.”

Touted by TODAY`s Richard Wilkins as “the most brilliant production imaginable”, Cavalia is currently wowing audiences and critics alike in Brisbane. Starting next month, the second Australian leg for the multi-disciplinary spectacular will kick off in the state capital of New South Wales. Following Sydney, the Canadian-based troupe will travel to Melbourne, where opening night is scheduled for August 7, 2013, under the gleaming White Big Top at The Docklands.

Enjoyed by some 3.5 million people, Cavalia is a unique and lavish production involving 44 magnificent horses and featuring 36 riders, aerialists, acrobats, dancers and musicians from all over the world. A show unlike any other, Cavalia celebrates the relationship between humans and horses, virtually reinventing the equestrian arts.
