Colic Claims Thoroughbred Sire Northern Meteor

Northern Meteor, one of the brightest stallion prospects in Australian racing, has died suddenly from a colic attack. 

Widden Stud, the famed thoroughbred nursery where Northern Meteor had stood since his retirement from the racetrack in 2009, confirmed the young stallion died late on Tuesday night.

"He was a strong and noble horse that made a lasting impression on all who knew him and to say we are shattered here would be an understatement," Widden's Antony Thompson said in a statement.

With 17 Australian winners and one Singapore winner from his first crop of foals, Northern Meteor, is set to be crowned leading first-season sire after an epic battle with Sebring, the 2008 Golden Slipper who also stands at Widden.
