The Westfalian foundation stallion Florestan I has passed away at age 26 at his home Landgestut Warendorf in Germany, on Tuesday 2 January 2011, due to problems connected with his age. British Showjumper Ben Maher has lost one of his top young horses in what appears to be a freak heart attack. New Hendra Virus Case In Townsville Area

A deceased horse on a property in the Townsville area has returned a positive test result for Hendra virus infection. Queensland Chief Veterinary Officer, Dr Rick Symons said the horse had shown rapid onset of illness. “The horse died on Tuesday and the positive result for the virus came back late last night,” Dr Symons said. “The veterinarian who attended the horse used the proper precautions including the use of personal protective equipment (PPE). Biosecurity Queensland is in the process of quarantining this property and will test and monitor the other five horses at this location over the next month.” ...

British Museum Celebrates the History of the Horse

The British Museum is planning its first exhibition devoted to the horse, with a display tracing our favourite animal's story across thousands of years of human history. The free exhibition, titled 'The Horse: Ancient Arabia to the Modern World', will run from 24 May to 30 September and has been timed to coincide with the Olympic Games, but has also been conceived as a diamond jubilee gift to a celebrated horse lover, the Queen. ... The sport of Team Penning is becoming hugely popular in Australia, with Clubs growing fast and events scheduled almost every weekend across the country. Now another cattle working sport from the US, which is growing in popularity in that country, is emerging as a great way to have fun with horses and cows - Ranch Sorting. The Team Penning Australia Inc website calls the sport Arena Sorting and is predicting that it's going to take off in Australia as it has in the USA.
