Horsezone Reviews: Equine Emergency Rescue - A Horse Owner's Guide to Large Animal Rescue

Published on Wednesday, May 18, 2011 in Reviews

Georgia Fasher recently read 'Equine Emergency Rescue – a horse owner’s guide to Large Animal Rescue', which was written by MaryAnne Leighton & Michelle Staples and found it an informative book, which she thinks would be good for all horse people to own.

"Don’t attach a rope and tractor to a horse’ tailbone!" One of the most glaring observations after reading this book is the lack of common sense some people have.

Aside from that and on a more useful note, this book demonstrates the need for knowledge to safely carry out equine emergency rescues. It covers all major accidents including floating, slipping down cliffs and horses stuck in mud.  I found a very interesting element of the book was the authors stress on the fact that people need to take on a role that best suits them in an emergency situation.

Aside from the very graphic photos, the book assists you to understand the best way of approaching a horse in many different rescue situations. Also the best method of rescue to apply to many varied situations without endangering yourself or the people you are working with. It covers the different materials which can be used and has a great information on all the knots you can use too.

If you would like to become a large animal emergency rescuer, this book would be a great start for finding out what it's all about and for information on some methods of rescue.

A Word About the Authors

MaryAnne Leighton has a lifelong love affair with horses and the written word. She is a horsewoman and established author, features writer, editor and proofreader. She writes biography and non-fiction and her extensive experience in the horse world allows her to write with authority for equine publications worldwide.

MaryAnne has had careers in public relations, marketing and horse stud management. She bred horses for twenty years – both her own national champions and for studs that ranged in size from two stallions and twenty mares to seven stallions and four hundred mares. She has travelled extensively and, apart from horse-related themes, has written about subjects as diverse as the European Space Agency, the use of computer systems within an abattoir and the intensity of the darkness in the bowels of Mt Isa mine.

In 2006 she was commissioned to write Living the Legend: the Ian Francis Story, the biography of one of the world’s most accomplished horsemen that sells not only in Australia but through Clinton Anderson’s Downunder Horsemanship in the USA.

MaryAnne’s home has always been a sanctuary for aged, infirm, injured and abandoned animals and her passion for the plight of horses that are injured or killed during rescue from entrapment lead her to publish Equine Emergency Rescue in November 2010.

Michelle Staples is based in the USA and has written many articles about horse safety and a book that was published in the USA titled 'Save Your Horse'.
