Joseph Zbukvic Takes Line Honours in Inglis Equine Art Prize

 

Well known Victorian water colour artist Joseph Zbukvic has taken line honours for his artwork ‘Early trackwork - Kyneton’ in the 2012 Inglis Equine Art Prize . The winners were announced at a gala function held overnight in the historic Newmarket Stable at Inglis’ Sydney headquarters in Randwick.

Winner Zbukvic took away $15,000 with runner up Tony Pridham, also from Victoria, receiving prizes of Antler luggage and Yalumba wine to the value of $2,500 for his work ‘Nothing more to give - Master Tiangar’.

The theme for this year’s awards was ‘At the Track’ and was judged by Australian portrait artist Nafisa Naomi, renowned equine artist Alister Simpson and Inglis Deputy Chairman, Arthur Inglis.

Said Ms Naomi: “The standard of the finalists was very high and we saw many beautiful variations of the theme. But it was Joseph’s watercolour that captured the atmosphere and realism of early morning track work while at the same time maintaining a wonderful abstract quality.”

Equine artist Alister Simpson added: “Inglis ought to be commended as they have given artists of all genres the opportunity to showcase their work to an audience they otherwise would not have reached. The standard of the competition will undoubtedly help lift the standard of equine art in Australia.”

Said, Inglis Deputy Chairman Arthur Inglis: “One of the objectives of the Inglis Equine Art Prize is to encourage all artists to enter. I am delighted to see how many non-equine artists have embraced this, including our winner.

“I congratulate all finalists on the standard of their work and in particular Joseph Zbukvic for his stunning watercolour.”

The winner was chosen from 134 entries from around the world which was reduced to 34 finalist works of art representing 30 artists from four countries.

The prize is in its second year. It was established by Arthur Inglis and Mike Coward of Australian Art Sales, as a way of promoting and protecting classic thoroughbred and equine art in Australia and internationally.

Public viewings of the works will be held in Sydney, Melbourne and Scone, with all 34 works available for purchase.
