Congratulations to Courtney Bird and Marquise on winning the Horsezone Small Show Hack Championship at the Barastoc Horse of the Year Show.

Marquise (Borneo Jo) was bred by Dalgleish Bloodstock Limited NZ was foaled in 2007.

He was purchased from New Zealand by Courtney's grandfather, Lee Hope.

He is by the USA sire, Johar, a grandson of Secretariat out of Pichard, a paternal granddaughter of Danehill and was trained in Seymour Vic, by Lee and Shannon Hope for 12 starts with one win for $9,910 in stakes earnings.

Courtney's mum, Lisa Bird, had her eye on him as her sister, Tahlia Hope, rode him in track work and she could see his potential even in racing condition.

He did not live up to the hoped for promise with racing and Lisa Bird got him in May 2013.

Courtney rode him initially, but then she was kicked by another horse and broke her ribs and punctured her lungs so she was off riding for about four months.

So Lisa rang Paul Austin and asked if he would take him for the winter as they were going to miss most of their show season, so he was shown for the winter in Queensland with much success, winning Champion ridden Thoroughbred and the Open Hack at Brisbane Royal Show.

Marquise had several HOTY wins including QLD SHC and Equestrian QLD HOTY, so he came down for the Nationals and was placed third all in his first season of showing!

From the Nationals on Courtney had her boy Bailey, as he is affectionately known, back at home.

He is a very sooky, sensitive horse but is electric to ride and can be very challenging to say the least, but Courtney loves him!

Courtney's first big show with him was Grand Nationals, where she went top ten in her rider class and runner up small hack, which was a huge achievement within such a short time of the pair being back together. They also went on to be runner up at the All States Show Down to the beautiful Mikimoto.

Courtney was absolutely thrilled to win the Horsezone Small Show Hack Championships at the Barastoc HOTY Show and to be representing her home state is absolutely a dream come true. She can’t wait! Courtney is so excited and proud to be the Victorian representative.
