The team at Horsezone is keen to find out more about what young riders are up to and how they are working towards achieving their horsey goals. The juniors are the future of all horse sports, so in our opinion they are VIPs!

This week we catch up with 17 year old Madison Martin who lives in Camden NSW. Madison has been riding for four years now. She started at a local riding school and has moved on to having horses of her own that she trains and competes with in eventing.

How did you first become involved with horses?

I always wanted to ride and own horses whilst growing up but never got the chance until 2009, when I went to a holiday camp. One of the activities was horse riding and I immediately fell in love! After two camps and months of begging, I began lessons at Teen Ranch and that’s where it started.

Do you compete in sports other than eventing?

I mainly compete in eventing and a few showjumping and dressage days to further our eventing skills.

Tell us about your horses?

I have two horses, a Stock Horse mare named Charm who has taught me so much - she was the horse who made me fall in love with eventing. My other horse is a Thoroughbred mare named Jewel who I haven’t owned too long, but she has already taught me so much in a short time. I’m happy she will be the horse to take me up through the grades. I couldn’t pick which one is my “favourite” - they both are.

What are some of the challenges you face with training and competing?

There are challenges everyday from simple things like not having a good ride or not being able to ride due to long term things like injuries to my horses or myself.

Who is are your role models?

Well there are so many people I look up to, including Shane Rose and Megan Jones. I aspire to be like them one day and represent our country, but I especially look up to my coach Erin Roddy, who inspires me to become a better rider and a better person each and every day. I am so grateful to have such talented people to look up to.

What advice can you give to other young people wanting to get involved with horses/eventing?

If you have a dream go for it! Never give up, even if you think it will never get better, because we all have those days and believe me it will improve, if you just keep at it you will succeed.

What are your plans for the future?

My short term goal is to just keep competing, get as much experience as I can and do the best as I can. I would like to make my first three day event going pre-novice in April 2014 at Sydney International Horse Trials and then move on up through the grades. As for my long term goals, I want to go as far as I can with an eventing career and to have young riders like me now, one day actually look up to me! I hope to be able to inspire them.

Is there a horse sport you'd love to try?

Well I have tried quite a few other horse sports and honestly I found them all fun, but I couldn’t imagine doing anything else other than eventing.

If you could ride any horse in the world, who would it be?

There are so many amazing horses I would love to ride! A few would include, Big Star, High Kingdom and Totilas.

Where would you like to be in 10 years?

The best rider and trainer I can possibly be!

Thanks so much for your time Madison, we look forward to hearing how you and your horses are going in the future!
