More than a mare event, South Australian horse breeding expo mixes education and trade

Published on Tuesday, May 24, 2016 in General

Problems with mares getting into foal, AI and Embryo Transfer and understanding open line breeding in pedigrees are all topics covered at the upcoming Horse SA Horse Breeding Expo.

International horse reproduction expert, Dr Jose Len, joins pedigree expert Brian Messner and Meadows veterinarian Dr. Greg Rodda in an educational program unlike anything else on offer.

Katherine Szalay-Evans, who started the event four years ago before handing over management to Horse SA said “Breeding is one area of the horse industry that seems to be left out in regards to educational events. By bringing together veterinarians, industry experts and relevant businesses to share their knowledge and products with horse breeders can learn how they can improve their skills and breeding practices”

Organised by non-profit Horse SA, the expo is designed to engage a wide range of people, from those interested in breeding their first foal through to the more serious professional seeking to invest in a performance sports or race horse.

“Through providing events such as this, with the opportunity to hear from experts, horse breeders can make informed choices and ensure that there is a market for the foal’ said Julie Fiedler, Executive Officer for Horse SA. “The expo compliments our sustainable land management and horse welfare programs.”

Companies and breed societies are invited to take up a trade stand.

The event is being held on Saturday 4 June in the picturesque South Australian town of Hahndorf, the oldest German town in Australia. The township’s many attractions, eateries and motels provide an attractive base to attend the expo and stay on for another day and enjoy the region.
