NCHA Cutting Futurity Wrap Up

Published on Thursday, June 13, 2013 in General

The Celebrity Cutting Horse Challenge for Charity took place on Friday night. Riders were Colin Friels, one of Australia’s most respected actors, country music legend James Blundell, Kevin Anderson, local MP for Tamworth, local breakfast radio presenter Emm Hall, singer/songwriter Sophie Clabburn from the Sunny Cowgirls and former NRL player Ian Hindmarsh. HORSEZONE was lucky enough to catch up with a few of the riders before their event. See video below of interviews and see some cutting action!

Phil Dawson of Glen Innes took out the Open Futurity title at the 2013 National Cutting Horse Association (NCHA) Imax Gold Tamarang Futurity in front of a packed arena at the Australian Equine and Livestock Events Centre (AELEC) in Tamworth.

Dawson, riding Foo Licious for owner Ryan Fielden, emerged victorious in a hotly contested field which featured some breathtaking cutting action from the top 25 best performing Futurity horses of 2013, all competing for the $75,000 winners cheque.

Dawson scored a massive 151 points and withstood some strong competition from professional trainer Todd Graham riding No Moore One Moore, who scored 149 points.

Graham capped off a solid event by finishing in third place with 146.5 points riding Blinham Ellie Again.

The Non Pro Futurity title was won by Lindsey Wheatley of Kaarimba, Victoria riding Dara TR Cocoas Preview, who scored an outstanding 150 points, the second highest score of the entire event.

Wheatley had an outstanding Futurity and was one of three lady riders who qualified for the Open Futurity Final where she finished in fourth place, again on Dara TR Cocoas Preview.

General Manager of the NCHA Glenn Morgan said the NCHA Futurity had again proven to be hugely successful with over 16 events and 540 horses from across Australia competing for a combined prize pool of over $700,000.

“This is our 40th Futurity and the level of interest from both competitors and spectators has been overwhelming,” Morgan said.

“We’ve had record numbers of spectators and are hugely appreciative of the support of the community.

“The standard of competition has been exceptionally high and seems to get better each year,” Morgan said.

A strong local contingent featured in both the Open and Non Pro Futurity with Grant Quigley (Tamworth), Hugh Miles (Tamworth), Rod Hodgman (Glen Innes), James Hodgman (Glen Innes) and Amelia Tonkin (Barraba) all putting in solid performances.

“It’s fantastic to see the North West region so well represented at this prestigious event,” Morgan said.

“We had a packed stadium for the Futurity Final which creates a real buzz in the arena,” Morgan said.

Around 20,000 visitors attended the Futurity over the 11 days of competition which brings together hundreds of horses, champion riders, elite trainers and over 80 western traders.

The NCHA will host the 2014 Futurity in Tamworth from the 29 May to 8 June.
