Fergybrook Western Horses, located on 40 acres located in Burra, New South Wales, breed quality horses that are cool minded, trainable, possess the desired movement and excel in the show pen.

The farm consists of purpose built steel and netting fences for the safety of all mares and foals, shelter sheds, a round yard, sand arena and a quality stable complex.

Fergybrook Western Horses is very much a family oriented hobby, run by Pat and Colleen Ferguson and their son Mark.

Most excitingly for Australian fans of western horses, Fergybrook has just imported the first LAZY LOPER colt to Australia, not only for their breeding program, but to enhance the programs of other western breeders Australia wide!

How it all began...

Fergybrook as a prefix was established 30 years ago when the Fergusons began to breed Palominos. Their love of Palominos led the family into discovering the joy of Quarter Horses, when in the early 1990s they purchased a Palomino Quarter Horse called Docs Cowboy.  Cowboy was trained in western pleasure (he was Kyle Mobberley's old youth horse), so he was the stepping stone for the Fergusons to get involved with western pleasure.

Mark has always been involved with the horses, "didn't really have much choice", he says, "when you live out in the country and surrounded by horses, horses just become part of your life. Mum and dad are still very active with the horses. Dad shoes them, does all the fencing and fixes anything that needs fixing. Mum feeds them, rugs them, loves 'em! Me, I just do most the riding, when you work a full time job 10-12 hours a day it makes for a challenge!"

"It's a real family effort and when I got serious about breeding trying to establish a good brand of horses for people to buy, it was only fitting to use my parents prefix Fergybrook, because what surrounds me is their life time of hard work."

The Fergusons are great believers in all western horses and you'll find not only Quarter Horses, but also Paints and an Appaloosa on their property.  They mainly show in western events and are happy to deal with people across all the western breeds.

"Importing a top stallion is something that I've always had in the back of my mind to do," says Mark. "I guess its a new adventure, a new challange, we do everything ourselves besides having a stallion to breed our own horses.  Also it's about timing and at the time everything just fell into place!"

"I had done a lot of research and contacted a lot of people in the States trying to find the ideal horse that fitted my objectives. I was looking for a horse that didn't have the common bloodlines that we already have in a lot of our pleasure horses in Australia, a horse that you could cross with many different pleasure mares, that wouldn't result in line breeding."

"This was a little challenging because you want to find the best proven bloodlines both up and down but don't want the bloodlines that our top pleasure horses are carrying. I did go out in search of a Lazy Loper colt, as he was a new stallion on the American scene making great in roads."

"I was very impressed with this stallion's offspring, his second foal crop (he only sired four foals his first year at stud) went on and won the prestige AQHA Congress 2YO Western Pleasure Masters and the AQHA World Show 2YO Western Pleasure, the two biggest two year old pleasure events you can win in the world, more impressive these wins were on two different horses. I knew he was going to be a sire of the future!"

"Finding a Lazy Loper colt with a good pedigree dam was challenging. As Lazy Loper was a relatively new sire, there wasn't a lot out there on the ground. Bloodlines of the dams were either something that was unheard of or bloodlines that related back to a lot of pleasure horses back in Australia."

"I did give up at one stage, because I couldn't find what I wanted and then out of the blue I got on to One Lazy Impulse (aka Eddie). I saw his dam's bloodlines and thought this is a great cross and saw a video of him and the rest is history!"

"His mother is by Impulsions. Impulsions is an AQHA World Champion and Congress Champion western pleasure horse. He's the sire of multiple AQHA, APHA, PHBA World Champions and Congress Champions. Impulsions is one of only three stallions in western pleasure history to be inducted into both the breeding Hall Of Fame and the riding Hall of fame. Also Impulsions is the sire of A Sudden Impulse, who's the sire of RL Best of Sudden."

"One Lazy Impulse's dam is out of Krymsun Jet Set, who has produced AQHA World/Reserve and Congress Champions.  Some of her winning offspring includes One Hot Krymsun, Repeated in the Red, Good Luck Girl and Krymsun Hot Invite."

This impressive young stallion will certainly be an asset to Fergybrook and Australian western breeders! Mark advises there has already been plenty of interest shown for breeding to him, "there are a few mares on the list already. With the economy slowing a bit, I understand that for a lot of people having horses/breeding can be expensive, so we have offered a discount of $250, off the price of a service if it is booked before 1 August 2012. AI only will be offered and to a limited number of mares, so everything runs smoothly for Eddie's first season standing to the public. We did breed some of our mares last year, so we're keen to see those foals when they arrive!"

One Lazy Impulse will not be resting on the laurels of his fabulous breeding, he will be in attendance at the NPHA Pleasure Celebration show this year, competing in the 3YO Western Pleasure.  Mark, who is eligible to compete in Amateur division as he is not a professional trainer, has done all Eddie's breaking in and training in Australia and is very impressed with his temperament. Mark will be showing him at the NPHA and says, "In no form am I a trainer, I just like riding and playing around with my horses."

More Fergybrook horses...

Mark's showing success started at a young age with Winderadeen Red Rock (aka Peppy), who was a very unique crop out. At the time he was only regisited Paint as back then horses couldn't be registered Quarter Horse if they had too much white. The pair went on to win many Championships at both NSWPH State and PHHA National shows, going through the ranks from Youth to Amateur and also competing in open classes in events that included western pleasure, trail, hunter under saddle and halter.

When they changed the rules about double registered horses Peppy, was registered as a Quarter Horse and had one year showing as a Quarter Horse, winning NSW QH State Open Trail Challenge and Q7 Reserve Champion Amateur Western Pleasure.

Mark also had an Appaloosa, Hot Damm Here I am, which he took to the Appaloosa Nationals and did very well with, winning champions and reserve champions in amateur western pleasure, trail and hunt seat equitation.

Mark has gone on to other successes at all the big shows in Australia with Quarter Horses and Paints, including reserve champion in the NPHA 3YO Western Pleasure with Paint mare Illoominate and placing fifth out of a big class in the 2009 NPHA $25,000 Futurity with Quarter Horse, Lopin For Gold. He was the only amateur owner in the class. Mark still has this mare, "known as baby, Lopin For Gold has always been a competitive horse in the elite competition.  She's had wins at Halter Showcase, NSW QH State and Reserves at NPHA.  Hopefully, if time permits, she will get shown at NPHA this year before being bred to One Lazy Impulse."

Fergybrook currently has some well bred youngsters for sale including a HF Somethin Hot (imp) yearling gelding, who is a nice type with good conformation. "He's a really friendly horse who wants to be your friend and should make a really good riding horse. I've recently started giving him some lunging work and he's going quite well, but until now he's been out in the paddock, just being a horse."

"We also have some really nice Invited Tiger (imp) weanlings for sale. These will be eligible for the Invited Tiger incentive... and if you're looking for a new saddle, we have three of those for sale too!" says Mark.

We wish the Fergusons best of luck for the NPHA Pleasure Celebration Show with One Lazy Impulse - I'm certainly looking forward to watching him in action and to seeing his babies on the ground!
