Not Quite All Beatson's Way in Final - Bayer Super League Series ESNZ Jumping Series

Maurice Beatson wound out a brilliant season winning the Bayer Super League Series at the Equestrian Sports New Zealand Jumping Series Grand Finals in Feilding today (Sunday) but it was not quite all his way.

In the super league grand finale, he had to bow to fellow World Champs team-mate Samantha McIntosh who completed the two round competition with zero faults aboard her imported mare Estina to take the win.

Beatson was second and third aboard his mounts Schimmel Warrior and his Showjumper of the Year champ My Gollywog. Claire Wilson (Waipukurau) and Alaric II was just a single fault behind in fourth spot.

It was a heart-stopper in the all-important pony grand prix grand finale. All season the series points have bounced back and forth between Melanie Weal (Te Awamutu) on Hopeful Illusion and Emily Fraser (Takapau) on Tony the Pony.

Fraser, who is trained by Beatson and his partner Sally Clark, was the second to last to go of five combinations through to the jump-off and set a cracking pace, going clear in 35.65 seconds.

It was down to Weal who looked to have it sewn up until she turned too tight into the double and it came unstuck from there. She finished in fifth place in the final and had to tip her hat to series champ Fraser.

The two classes at the impressive Manfeild venue marked the end of an amazing 2012-2013 season.
