Record Breaking Entries Makes HTBA Scone Horse Trials Largest ODE in Australia

Published on Tuesday, March 4, 2014 in General

A record 500 entries has been received for this weekend’s Hunter Thoroughbred Breeders Association (HTBA) Scone Horse Trials making it the largest One Day Event in Australia.

“This record participation level is a credit to the local volunteer HTBA Scone Horse Trials organising committee and with the introduction of the inaugural Twilight Show Jumping, this weekend is set to provide a great display of equine skills for everyone to enjoy,” said Dr Cameron Collins, HTBA President.

Trials Committee President, Mr Blair Richardson said this year’s number of entries makes the HTBA Scone Horse Trials the largest country event in Australia commencing this Saturday 8 March.

“I am amazed at how the event has grown to be one of the most anticipated on the national calendar, but it wouldn’t be possible without sponsor support," Mr Richardson said.

“The 500 horse and rider combinations, ranging in ability from beginners to past and hopeful Olympians, will assemble in the Upper Hunter’s picturesque “Broomfield” for the bi-annual HTBA Scone Horse Trials.

“Our committee works tirelessly to make sure both the March and October events run smoothly and I am proud to be a part of such a great event.

“Many of our participants and supporters have links to the thoroughbred industry so it is a great opportunity to further develop these connections and create awareness about our event, Australia’s horse capital, and provide due recognition of valued sponsors.

“It is no wonder the Hunter Region and Scone itself proudly takes the name of Australia’s Horse Capital when the area supports other national events and organisations such as the Scone Race Club’s richest country racing carnival, is home to the Australian Stock Horse Society and the largest thoroughbred breeding region in the country," he said.

In an effort to share the joys of the sport and the event with the community, theSaturday evening will play host to both the Two Star and the Three Star Show Jumping phase from 5pm.

“This is the first time we have held Twilight Show Jumping, both competitors and spectators are welcome to watch some of the country’s top riders battle it out whilst enjoying a sports bar type atmosphere, with dinner available to purchase,” Mr Richardson said.

“There are close to 20 entries in each of the Two Star and the Three Star classes and at least five of these horse and rider combinations are vying to be selected on the Australian Equestrian Team competing at the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France later this year.

“It is a fantastic opportunity for competitors and spectators alike to see and support the country’s elite riders at an event that has fostered Australia’s Equestrian talent for years,” Mr Richardson said.

Mr Richardson thanked all the sponsors and encouraged the public to visit the event.

The HTBA is dedicated to creating awareness of the importance of thoroughbred breeding in the Hunter Valley and are committed to providing a pathway for young horse lovers to make their way in the industry.

"The ongoing partnership with the Scone Horse Trials provides us with a great platform to achieve this,” Dr Collins said.

“Along with providing education pathways and opportunities, HTBA members support a strong diverse economy based on a wide range of sustainable, long term industries.  The development of one industry should not be at the expense of other industries, the environment and the health of the community," he said.

Dr Collins encouraged the general public and their families to visit the Scone Horse Trials set in the unique country of the Upper Hunter and watch some of Australia’s top riders compete.

“It is a great spectator sport for everyone to enjoy,” Dr Collins said.
