National Young Rider champion Tom McDermott dominated the World Cup qualifier at the Summer Showjumping Classic in Sydney on Sunday from start to finish, jumping the only clear rounds of the class on SL Limerick.

The Mulgoa-based 20-year-old was the last to go of the eight riders through to the second round and entered the Olympic arena at Sydney International Equestrian Centre with three rails up his sleeve.

He left the poles untouched around the tough Leopoldo Palacios-designed track to finish with just one time penalty, ahead of Queensland's David Goodwin and the homebred Warrego Jericho on 12 faults, and Victoria's Tim Clarke on Caltango, also on 12 faults in a slower time.

McDermott finished runner-up in this event in 2011 on the same horse, making this year’s emphatic victory all the sweeter.

“I am really happy, the horse didn’t jump so well the first two days but it all fell into place today,” said McDermott, who earlier won the Young Rider final and finished second in the Mini Prix.

Queensland's Olivia Hamood was fourth on Nero GHP, while Ebenezer-based Jamie Kermond was fifth on his grey mare Colthaga and seventh on his new ride, the bay stallion Quite Cassini.

Clarke's third placing was enough to secure his exuberant grey mare Caltango her second Golden Grand prize. His wife Ingrid accepted the inaugural Ted Dwyer memorial award for the owner of the leading horse in the World Cup season.

Kermond was officially crowned the winner of the 2013 Australian league of the World Cup, having come into this event with an unassailable lead.

Olympic course designer Palacios, based in Venezuela, described Sunday's World Cup track as of an "international standard" and "one of the toughest classes in Australia".

The technical 1.50m to 1.60m course caught out rider after rider. Hamood, the seventh rider out in the first round, had the crowd on the edges of their seats as she looked like posting the first clear until tapping out the final fence for four penalties on Nero GHP.

Goodwin also had a rail late on course and Clarke had a foot in the water to carry four penalties into the second round. It wasn't until McDermott came out at number 13 that the appreciative crowd was rewarded with a faultless round.

The second round saw a raised and shortened track that tested the scope of the eight combinations that finished on nine or fewer penalties.

The second fence, a green square oxer, caught out several combinations.

The first of the four faulters on course, Clarke with Caltango, was unlucky to draw a rail in the middle of the treble combination and the penultimate fence, a skinny white verticle, to finish on a total of 12.

Hamood and Nero GHP added 12 penalties to their first round score.

Goodwin was clear until the treble, where he pulled the B and C elements. However, he kept the rest of the rails up and finished on a quicker time than Clarke to move into the lead.

Despite a hairy moment in the treble, McDermott kept his head to claim the win. His clear first round earned him half a Certificate of Capability for the World Equestrian Games in Normandy, France next August.

WENTWORTH SADDLES AND BOB BROOK MEMORIAL MINI PRIX FINAL

The Wentworth Saddles and Bob Brook Memorial Mini Prix Final was set to be a showdown of 20 of Australia's best up-and-coming horses over a very technical track set at a strong 1.45m.

Palacios’s course proved to be a challenge for the field, with only three riders, a current and two former Australian champions -- Jamie Kermond, Ron Easey and Tom McDermott-- posting clears.

These three riders are renowned for their speed against the clock, which set the stage for an exciting jump-off.

Kermond came out first with Killeter Park Caracas and set a phenomenal pace from the outset taking the shortest possible track, he flew down to the last to post a clear and put the pressure on Easey and McDermott.

Easey and Town Man set a quick pace to the first, however, a tight turn to the second oxer drew a rail for the pair, and a further two rails followed to put them out of contention for the win.

It came down to McDermott with the quick and scopey Laguna Beach to see if he could steal the win from Kermond. As he galloped to the last it looked like he had snatched the victory, but the clock showed he was .08 of a second slower to give the win to Kermond.

RESULTS: WENTWORTH SADDLES AND BOB BROOK MEMORIAL MINI PRIX FINAL

  1. Jamie Kermond – Killeter Park Caracas (0/0, 40.12)

KINGSLAND YOUNG RIDER FINAL

Sunday was a red-letter day for the Langbecker family, with Tom McDermott winning the Kingsland Young Rider final on their horse GH EL Bandito and their daughter Brooke running second on Riverside Freedom.

The Young Rider event is always extremely competitive and with several competitors with Grand Prix and World Cup experience, the stage was set for an exciting contest.

The track, designed by Palacios, did not allow for any margin for error, and of the top 20 qualifiers, only three clear rounds were posted.

Two of the clears were from McDermott and Olivia Hamood, who went on to win and place respectively in the afternoon's World Cup qualifier.

They were joined in the jump-off by up-and-coming Queenslander Langbecker. She was first out in the jump-off on the lovely big grey Riverside Freedom, who posted a classy clear round with a time of 45.99 seconds.

Hamood and GH Avion answered with a time of 41.18 seconds, but a rail down put them into second place.

McDermott, the 2013 Young Rider champion, had the advantage of being the final rider and knew what he had to do to win. The Mulgoa-based 20-year-old did just that, posting a clear round in a time of 44.82 seconds.

RESULTS: KINGSLAND YOUNG RIDER FINAL

  1. Tom McDermott - GH El Bandito (0/0, 44.82)
  2. Brooke Langbecker -  Riverside Freedom (0/0, 45.99)
  3. Olivia Hamood - GH Avion (0/4, 41.18)
  4. Maddison Stephen - Barrabadeen Sir Lancelot (4, 84.11)
  5. James Arkins - Rosthwaite Gullumae (4, 84.58)

FERNHILL ESTATE SUPER JUNIOR FINAL

The first event in the final day of competition of the 30th anniversary Summer Showjumping Classic saw the top 20 Junior qualifiers jumping for the crown of 2013 Super Junior champion.

Palacios designed a tough 1.25m track for the juniors’ first class of the competition in the main Olympic Arena.

After the first round, five riders posted penalty-free scores, with Jamie Priestley having the advantage of two horses in the jump-off.

Emily Mann with Star Peptalk was first on course but unfortunately had 12 penalties to add to her score, which left the door wide open for the following riders.

Priestley was out second on her lovely TP Classic Act, and posted a great clear with a quick time of 35.27 seconds, throwing down the gauntlet for the next riders.

Stephanie Mackillop and the wonderful Alcheringa Tradition set a blistering pace from the start but pulled a rail at the first element of the combination to take the pressure off Priestley, recording a time of 38.50.

Jake Hunter and HL Elegants were the next combination on course, recording the fastest time of the jump-off with 34.86 seconds. But unfortunately for Hunter, he drew the same rail as Mackillop at the first element of the double.

As Priestley returned on her second ride, KS Optimus, she had already sealed the win, but the question was whether she could take out first and second place.

Priestley took a more conservative track with her second horse and as she flew over the last in a time of 41.01 and no rails down she had convincingly taken out the crown of 2013 Super Junior champion with a rare first and second in this highly competitive class.

RESULTS: FERNHILL ESTATE SUPER JUNIOR FINAL

1. Jamie Priestley - TP Classic Act (0/0, 35.27)
2. Jamie Priestley - KS Optimus (0/0, 41.01)
3. Jake Hunter - HL Elegants (0/4, 34.86)
4. Stephanie Mackillop - Alcheringa Tradition (0/4, 38.50)
