How do you write an ad for one of the most lovely, yet complex geldings you know? Honestly. Pilot is a 16’1 stunning 13 year old unraced TB. He has definitely “been there done that” …and near died trying sometimes – just ask him! Despite his supermodel looks, he is very comfortable roughing it and is unflappable on the trail, loving nothing better than a lazy lope through the bush. No buck or shy and unfazed by motorbikes, kangaroos, bridges, water etc. He has worked stock and carried injured sheep without batting an eyelid.
Pilot has a superb technique over a fence and has jumped rounds of 1m+, indoors and out, with plenty of scope. He is currently competing C Grade and attending regular State Development Squad training. Consistent on correct leads and changes on the fly. He has had wide exposure and has picked up countless placings – PC and EA – in straight showjumping, Combined Training and Horse Trials. He is usually very reliable on cross country, despite not being the bravest horse going around. He does get nervous on cornering and jumping when the going is slippery; thankfully someone invented studs! He’s very athletic and fit and passes HT vet checks quickly every time. Pilot has had lots of Pony Club and competition experience… and heaps of clinics with his teen rider. His adjustability is great and he’s been a state finalist in Ride-to-Time for the past two seasons running – consistently accurate to within half a second of ideal time over the 1km run.
And then there is Stressage… in an arena… where, for some reason, he thinks he is going to be eaten by the monster who lives there. No nasties, just genuinely anxious at times. This does, on occasion, turn straight lines into lovely half pass or renvers… When he does relax he gets great comments from instructors and judges for his “big movement” and “uphill canter circles”. Pilot does have a terrific long rein walk that scores well, he is light in the contact and is training leg yields and shoulder-in fluently. “Full of potential” they say, but unfortunately beyond what we are able to get consistently. He has scored 8s and 9s throughout dressage tests, but is variable and tense in this competition phase.
Yes, there have been many things we have tried, including expert feed analysis, teeth, saddle fit and treating him for ulcers, with varying degrees of success but we can’t quite nail *the* right solution for him yet. With a young horse coming on this season, the tough decision was made to try and find him a good home who can do him justice.
So, if dressage really isn’t your thing (or you might have some new ideas) and you can cope with some quirks then Pilot could be for you. Pilot has been ridden and handled for 2 years by a teen rider (who is now only 15 yo) and has had one previous owner since foaling. He’d be suited to a brave rider wanting a showjumper to take up through the levels, an experienced rider looking for a project or a competent rider looking for a PC, farm horse or trail riding buddy. He’s easy to handle (catch, shoe, load, travel, teeth, rug etc.) and is a genuine sweetheart who resides at the bottom of any pecking order. Absolutely no dirt. A loving, patient home is sought for Pilot, where he will be treated kindly as he’s a sensitive soul with much to give the right rider. He’s obviously not a beginners horse due to his complexity, so please only make contact if you think you have the experience and heart to make it work with him.
