11 year old, chestnut thoroughbred mare
Lily raced until she was 4 years old and then enjoyed a wonderful 7 years as a paddock ornament. (She’s very pretty!) I bought Lily in December 2018 as a project, aiming to teach her the basics of dressage and prepare her for her next adventure with a new rider. Now that time has come!
Lily is super sweet. She is truly beautiful on the ground. Even my non-horsey dad thinks she’s an absolute sweetheart and loves to snuggle up to her for a gentle cuddle. Easy to groom, shoe, float, pick feet etc etc. She even has good manners at feed time!
Over the last 6 months, Lily has been taught correctly and now has a truly solid dressage foundation from which to build. I have taken Lily to my regular coach, Nicole Tough, for a number of lessons. Lily has proven herself to be a willing and fast learner. Lily has the preliminary work mastered along with developing lateral work. In addition to travelling for lessons, I have taken Lily on outings around the local area, including to the beach.
Although Lily is 11 and is wonderfully calm and relaxed at home, her lack of ‘going out’ experience beyond the race track means she can still be a little green when going to new places, as some things are still very new to her. She shows no sign of bucking, rearing, kicking, biting or shying but does initially get tense and anxious in an environment with lots of new horses. As a result, Lily is not suitable for an inexperienced or nervous rider if intending to take her to competitions. Given Lily’s development and improvement in the time I’ve been training her, I have no doubt that with a few more outings under her belt she will be able to take her calm and relaxed home demeanor to a competition setting.
Under the training of a confident rider, Lily has the potential to be competitive in dressage and in the show ring. Just for fun, we have also tried our hand at a few jumps – Lily was certainly up for that as well!
