Your next best friend!?
Are you looking for an overgrown Labrador? A loving, sooky, cuddly big dog whose main purpose in life is to receive and give kisses? A soul mate to have slow (or purposeful, it’s up to you) sunset rides with? A horse, who despite being a bit unco, tries sooo hard to please? Then look no further- this may be your guy!
Concord is honestly the smoochiest horse I have had the pleasure of meeting. He will happily receive cuddles, scratches, ear rubs, nostril itches all day long and then groom your hair for you. If you sit with him while he is taking a nap he may just lay his head in your lap and lay soaking up the sun with his person.
He has been with us for just over a year. When we first started with him in January 2019 he was uncertain and reactive. His will to please at all times meant he ended up doing the opposite- if he didn’t know the answer he tended to overreact and panic. However with patience and exposure to a variety of situations he is now braver and more tolerant to a whole range of scenarios.
Once a week, for most of the past year he has been giving slow paced walk and trot lessons to a beginner. This is so she can learn the basics on a very obliging, not-stubborn-pony. He hasn’t put a foot wrong, just meandering around half asleep most of the time.
He is starting to get more and more accepting of the bit, and starting to engage his back. His confidence and coordination over jumps is improving, however he won’t ever be a fantastic athlete. As long as his new owner is patient and competent to deal with some quirkiness, should it arise (and only really does if he is pushed too far- and he does warn you before it happens so can be diffused) he will make an awesome adult riding club, trail riding and pleasure horse due to his calm, laid back disposition. He is still green with jumping, but is so honest and brave.
He has been to showjumping days, dressage days and had his eventing debut in the 60cm at Berrima. His dressage was sweet, one rail in the showjumping and an awesome cross country. He went over the ditch, into the water and through the finish with no penalties. He does need a confident rider to jump him, and someone who will “hold” his “hand”. Although, he is starting to develop an independent eye when it comes to striding. He could also make a sweet low level dressage mount. When he engages himself properly, he moves nicely.
Goes over tarps, into water, good to shoe, rug, has been clipped but was mildly sedated as we weren’t sure how he would react.
He needs someone patient with independent, soft hands. Someone who has a sense of humour and is able to deliver clear messages to him. And mainly, he needs someone who is going to love him, cuddle him and smooch him.
With time & consistency you will have a relaxed, laid back low level mount. Or if you wish, he will happily just be a trail riding mount, as he LOVES his hacks out and is the selected mount for any friends who come over for a ride.
