’m super excited and super proud to be sharing this video with you all!
She has earned her champion sash, and now she is ready to spread her wings and fly 🏹
Although I would love to keep her with me, I also am acutely aware that her greatness needs to be shared, not hidden away in the back paddock amongst the mulga and emus 😅.
With a heart and bravery the size of Texas, I present to you: Darlene - Race to Ranch
Darlene has a good, solid foundation in her flat work. She has established lateral movements and beginning flying changes. She loads on a step up trailer, you can shoe her untied. Don’t know if you can clip her cos that’s not my thing but you can ride with a tarp over her head and that’s probably pretty close 🤣
She’s bloody handy on gates, leading naughty Shetlands off, will go anywhere/jump over/up/onto anything and even say “yes” when I ask her if she would mind roping live cattle even though she had only ever roped the dummy before 🤣
She has beautiful, soft flowing movements and would suit Cowboy Dressage, Western Dressage, or normal Dressage (but who wants to be normal?) 😜
She would suit Ranch Versatility or any western events that require a horse with four legs and no papers!
She has a wonderful, solid, broke foundation that will lead her anywhere. I’m sure she could go eventing if you asked because she’s the type of horse that would walk through fire for you if you asked her to.
Travels well, leads well, does everything well. Mildly windsucks only when tied up, but I have found the frequency of this is decreasing daily, and I put it down to anxiety rather than a habit.
She is an easy keeper and has good feet.
She would suit an intermediate rider and above. She’s quiet but not dead so I wouldn’t want a beginner on her. She will go all day and would suit a mustering home also.
✨Darlene and I completed the 100 day Race To Ranch challenge to transform a racehorse into a ranch horse, with the finals being held at Cowgirls Gathering, October 1-3 in Kilkivan, QLD. Her video shows her final accomplishments at the competition where we were able to bring home the Co-Champion title. Her transformation was nothing short of amazing (after her last race was only 19/5/21) and I’m so proud of how gritty, versatile, brave and adaptable thoroughbreds are. ✨
The other reason I felt led to offer Big D up to the world was that I truly believe in the R2R concept.
We are stewards of these horses and are proving to the world that they have a market and a VALUE after racing. If we trainers can keep them, great, we rehome 10 horses (albeit to amazing places). If we do not keep them, we create a market for many more similarly talented horses to follow, paving the way forward to change the culture and opening up other avenues for them not previously considered.
Although I’m not the first, I sure hope I won’t be the last in this changing tide.
