Please note, Nelson is owned by the Empringham Family of Performance Horse Sales.
Nelson is a purebred Connemara by Greenhills Trooper Thomas out of Glenormiston Ciara. He is a Connemara through and through - tough, loyal and personality plus - he would live inside with us, if he could.
Nelson and Georgie have competed in a wide range of shows from North and North West Showjumping at Tamworth, to our local show runs and 2023 Interschool Nationals at Werribee. He has been Champion Showhunter at Forbes, placed up to second in Preliminary tests and won at Tamworth showjumping. With his previous owner, Nelson competed and won up to 110 at all the big shows including Australian Showjumping Titles. WIth Georgie, he had competed and placed up to 95cm.
Nelson is super safe to ride out in 300+ acre paddocks, ride bareback, with others, on his own and loves mustering sheep (not a massive fan of cows but is well exposed and reliable with them too).
To ride on the flat and the trails, Nelson loves a loose rein but is very well educated and, with a capable rider, works in a lovely frame. Georgie uses a bevel/ wilkie on the flat and swaps to a loose ring snaffle for dressage. For jumping, Nelson is ridden in a kimblewick as he can get strong if allowed to lean on the rider’s hands.
Nelson is generally very quiet and easy to ride. He is patient and tolerant, happily standing quietly for hours waiting for the sheep to move or his round at a show. If he snorts at something, he is reassured by a pat on the neck. He is used to ag shows, motorbikes, trains, trucks, tractors, fireworks and the nonsense of farm and family life.
Nelson is excellent to catch, handle, wash, groom and load. He does need convincing about washing his head and his rug needs to be placed on him, rather than thrown over him.
Nelson is safe enough for almost anyone to ride on trails, to show or to compete in dressage. He does however, require a non-nonsense confident and capable rider for jumping. Nelson can feel strong and forward in a jump off, which would rattle a nervous or inexperienced rider.
We are absolutely devastated to put Nelson on the market but Georgie’s legs keep growing and he deserves to be loved by another smaller teen or adult rider. Everyone who knows him, adores him and we have had a number of people ask to buy him! This is a very sad day in the Empringham household.
