New Twist to Port Douglas Hendra Death

Published on Friday, September 14, 2012 in General

Authorities suspect a horse killed by the Hendra virus on a Port Douglas property last week may have been infected by bats flying overhead.

The property, owned by Cindy and Brad Small opposite the Port Douglas air park, remains in quarantine after the horse died on 3 September.

No other horses or animals have tested positive to the disease and everyone who came into contact with it have also been given the all-clear.

Mr Small said all the horses were fine the previous night before they noticed the infected animal shaking on September 3 and called the vet.

The horse collapsed and died before the vet arrived and samples were taken before it was buried.
