9 - 10 October presented unseasonably cold weather for the Qld Eventing Championships, which found 234 competitors braving the unfriendly conditions for a great weekend of competition.
Some riders were chasing CIC qualifications, others were chasing a state championship title to hang on their wall, however, all had a fantastic weekend at the TDSJC committee's well run event.
Toowoomba had received some drenching rain on Friday, however, the ground jury decided early on Saturday morning that the grounds were safe enough to continue the event, with the only jumps pulled out of the cross country being the water jump (which was full to the brim and had become a river) and the last fence (a jetty - which in this case actually was a jetty - jutting well out in to the lake).
The dressage proved to be a very influential stage of the event, with the leaders of 6 out of 8 classes after the dressage going on to win the class. On Saturday, the Introductory and Preliminary classes show jumped after their dressage and due to the number of entries, the show jumping went on until 4.30pm.
The event committee at Toowoomba put on free drinks and Pizza for the riders on Saturday night. Unfortunately, due to the number of scratchings or perhaps because of the cold, which kept people in their trucks, the 40 pizzas went around as many people. This meant that everybody had to eat pretty much an entire pizza each!
The weather forecast for Sunday was not good. Gale force winds and lashing rain. Luckily, the bureau of meteorology got it a bit wrong and the rain and wind they promised stayed away until Sunday night.
Cross country just saw the occasional shower. The going on the cross country course was nowhere near as bad as people thought it would be, and despite a few slips, there were no major incidents. In the CIC classes, there were only 4 eliminations on cross country and one of those was when a 2 star rider completely forgot the second last fence.
Portia Wilson's horse was not passed at the vet check after cruising around the cross country. Unfortunately it seems that a bit of poor shoeing and a stone somewhere out on course put paid to his chances of finishing the event.
The showjumping in the 2 star class also saw Danae O'keefe retire after Prospect Hill White Magic strained a tendon and limped off the course. Luckily it seems that the damage was not as bad as initially thought and hopefully he will be back in work soon.
The Copabella Young Horse class was hotly contested with 15 horses vying for honor as Qld young event horse of the year. In a close run finish, Lauren bale and Rajmar Star just pipped Sarah English and Cil Dara Carlos for this prestigious prize.
