2011 Barastoc Young Showjumping Horse of the Year

Published on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in General

2011 Barastoc Young Showjumping Horse of the year will be even bigger and better than ever with two separate age categories - 4 & 5 Year Old Showjumping Horse Of the Year and 6 Year Old Showjumping Horse Of the Year - and two finals!

Elite showjumping competitor Paula Hamood, who was the Official Equestrian Trainer for the 2010 Singapore Youth Olympic Games and winner of the 2009 Barastoc Young Showjumping Horse of the Year series, is very excited about the extra category and feels it is a step in the right direction for showjumping, saying, "the benefit of splitting the young horses into two age groups is that the younger lesser experienced horses compete against each other and are not pressured by older more seasoned horses.  It is also nice to acknowledge and help support good training for young showjumping horses. The 4 and 5 year olds are the future of our sport and shouldn't be rushed through in order to be competitive against the older horses."

"This series will encourage the riders to invest in good basic training and be recognised for doing so.  The more seasoned 6 year old horses can generally be pushed harder than the younger campaigners and may have an unfair advantage over the younger less experienced horses. we, as riders should be focusing more on rideability, consolidating jumping technique and ensuring good basic grounding, resulting in longevity in the sport for our 4, 5 and 6 year olds, rather than burning them out attempting to win classes before they are mentally and physically ready."

"If we could learn to focus more on this process of education I believe that the standard of horses in the sport of showjumping in Australia will improve markedly and we will see more quality horses reaching grand prix level."

The 4 & 5 Year Old Series height will be 1.10m and the 6 Year Old Series will be 1.20m.

There will be $13,400 in Total Prize money for the two categories, Trophy Rugs to both Highpoint Scorers, Trophy Rugs to Winners of both Grand Prix's, plus Barastoc Feed and Product.
