2011 Sydney International Polo Pony Sale

Published on Thursday, October 6, 2011 in General

Sydney Polo Club hosted its third annual International Polo Pony Sale on Saturday 24 September at their prestigious Clubhouse, Richmond NSW.

In 2009, Peter and Rebecca Higgins decided  to hold a polo pony auction at their private grounds, to serve as a reliable selling point for players to showcase and promote their horses.

With Richmond now being the hub of polo in Sydney, the sale provides the opportunity to all seasoned players and beginners to view and trial top quality horses for sale in a world-class facility.

35 polo ponies, ranging from beginner horses, mounts suitable for top professional players and green horses that have only been stick and balled or have played low goal tournaments, were up for auction.

Ben Cowan of Sydney nominated three outstanding ‘Patron’ horses, with his seven year old gelding ‘Teak’ being sold for the top price of the sale to SIPPS auction founder Peter Higgins.

Peter had the opportunity of trialling Teak in the sale practice trials, and is thrilled with the purchase of this well bred polo pony.

Bob Hannon of Bayview Polo once again nominated two outstanding young horses, with his three year old Avispon (Argentinean Stallion) bred filly being sold to Scone, NSW and topping the young horse section.

John Hardee from Singapore purchased two great horses, nominated by Ben Cowan and Argosy Agricultural Group, to start his string of polo ponies here in Australia. John is a young polo player from The Singapore Polo Club, and has now relocated to Australia to attend University and play polo  in Sydney.

The Sydney International Polo Pony Sale will continue to grow and improve each year, with 2011 proving to be a world-class event. Spectators of the event pointed out that this arena is where million dollar horses can be showcased. In previous years, the auction was held in an indoor arena, however, in 2011 they stepped it up with a puprose built sale ring in the prestigious Sydney Polo Clubhouse, which featured a private bar, dinner and live entertainment.
