The 2012 Tasmanian Quarter Horse Championships, hosted by the Southern Tasmanian Quarter Horse Association, were held 17-20 February at Pontville Equestrian Park.

The USA judge for the show was Lynda Danielson, who judged the halter and western performance events, while Virginia Turner judged the dressage and Tania Hay took care of the hacking events.  The show, which included a full American programme, ran over the Friday and Saturday and was followed by a clinic with Lynda Danielson on the Sunday.

This was the first time in over twenty years that the Tasmanian Quarter Horse Championships has had a USA judge, so organisers and competitors alike were happy to welcome Lynda!

41 horses were entered for the show, which is good for Tasmania and numbers were slightly up on previous years. Four competitors even travelled from Victoria for the show.

There was prize money on offer for all classes with over $13,000 in prizes being won in total, making this the biggest Tasmanian State Championships ever!

The Organisers would like to thank their very generous sponsors for such great support: Stallions at Stud (who sponsored all the halter classes), Clairveaux Quarter Horses, Mitavite, HyGain, Khonke's Own, Sulky Gully Saddlery, International Animal Health Products, Ken Green Equine Therapy and NRG Products.

Tasmania does not currently have an indoor arena large enough to run a show of this size, so organisers and competitors were nervously watching the cloud riddled sky during the two days of competition.  The rain managed to hold off until the last four events, which of course happened to be the main western pleasure classes, including the Feature Western Pleasure! Unfortunately, it became a 'wet showshirt' competition, however, competitors and horses handled the downpour admirably. It was disappointing for all concerned that due to the lack of an indoor arena, this professionally run event ended up nearly being washed away!

The Southern Tasmania Quarter Horse Association and other horse related clubs are currently investigating their options regarding the building an indoor arena, which would see constant use and could be utilised by all equine disciplines, including the racing industry for their sales. So if anyone out there wants to help out with ideas on how to fund Tasmania's much needed indoor arena, please contact Claire from the Southern Tasmania Quarter Horse Association at cmdoran@iprimus.com.au
