The Pony Club NSW State Sporting and Campdrafting Championships were held on the 11th and 12th April at Coonamble Showgrounds, Coonamble.

Competitors and their families travelled from all over NSW and interstate from QLD to camp at the grounds over the weekend. Clifton Davis from West of the Range Pony Club said “It took 10 hours to drive to Coonamble. It was definitely worth it because I have made friends with kids I don’t see anywhere but at the Pony Club State Championships”.

Zone Chief Instructor Fiona Pennell is one of the key organisers of the event, and said the Championship was a success; “Everyone enjoyed the weekend and it all ran smoothly”.
The State Sporting Championships held on Saturday attracted 150 entries. Riders battled it out in a variety of races including Bending, Flag and Barrel racing.

Hannah Gordon from Queensland was awarded the 2015 Sporting Age Champion, and Georgia Osmond from Dungog Pony Club claimed a very close following score for the Reserve Champion in the under 11 years age group. For the 11 and under 13 years; Georgia Rigby and Tahlia Fenlon both from Queensland claimed the Age Champion and Reserve Champion titles respectively. Amanda Mills from Queensland was awarded Age Champion for the second year in a row for the 13 and under 15 years, while Chloe Shultz from Gloucester claimed Reserve Champion. The 15 and under 17 years Age Champion was awarded to Clifton Davis from West of the Range Pony Club and Benjamin Osmond from Dungog Pony Club was the Reserve Age Champion. Kate Patch from Queensland also claimed the Age Champion award for the second year in a row, while Tegan Byrnes from Queensland claimed the Reserve Champion title.

The Campdrafting Championships were held on the Sunday and attracted close to 100 competitors. Campdrafting involves riders demonstrating their skills at cutting a beast out of a mob in an enclosure and then manoeuvring it around a set course. Fiona Pennell said “Mr Paul Lunn was the Campdraft Judge at the Championship and was very pleased with the way riders competed and was so pleased to see such good sportsmanship among the competitors.”

The points were incredibly close in all age groups, with Abbey Mackaway representing Walcha in Zone 13 to win the Campdraft under 13 years Age Champion, with Georgia Bennetts from Cassilis Pony Club awarded the Reserve Champion. Clancy Martin from Merriwa in Zone 7 claimed the 13 and under 15 years Age Champion, and Jack Rewald from Queensland was awarded Reserve Champion. In the 15 and under 17’s Matthew Kelly from Wingham Pony Club scored the highest points to earn the Age Champion, while Clifton Davis from West of the Range continued his achievements to be awarded the Reserve Champion title. Toni Fallon from Queensland claimed the 17 and under 25 years Age Champion, with Andrew Hordern from Denman Pony Club close behind to be awarded Reserve Champion.

Points awarded to zones were tallied to reveal Zones 25 and 7 as the winning Pony Club Zones for each respective championship. Queensland riders took out the winning State for the Sporting, and New South Wales reclaimed their glory by winning Champion State Team for the Campdrafting Championship.
16 year old, Clifton Davis said the Championship weekend marked a personal achievement; “the highlight of the weekend was winning the 15 and under 17 years NSW Sporting Age Champion after being the Runner Up for the last 2 years”.

The Pony Club Association of NSW would like to thank all event competitors, officials and local event organisers in particular host zone 4 for their assistance in a fantastic Championship weekend.

The next State Championship is the State Jumping Equitation Championships hosted by Zone 26 on the 16-17th May at Clarendon.
