Haylage is forage made for horses from specifically selected grasses, cut at an optimum time and then sealed using a technique unique to Fitzpatrick Haylage.

Fitzpatrick Haylage’s packaging allows natural fermentation to take place, which preserves the grass and its nutrients and results in dust free forage that is low in mould spores, highly palatable and nutritious. This method also removes the dust and spores found in chaff and hay.

Haylage is a beneficial forage solution for horses. Horses enjoy grazing as their natural means of gathering food. A horse selects its feed on smell, taste, texture and moisture content. It must chew and grind its food thoroughly to prepare it for the digestion processes, so palatability is a must.

The horse’s hindgut contains millions of micro-organisms, which effectively digest the forage, producing fatty acids for energy and vitamin synthesis. The process is very slow, but highly effective, so for horses, a diet with balanced protein, energy and minerals in forage is very important.

Hard feeds usually contain high starch and protein and cannot be fully utilised in the small intestine. This causes residues of starch that overflow into the large intestine that can be rapidly fermented to D-lactic acid, which has adverse effects on digestion.
