An Evening With Andrew McLean

Published on Tuesday, January 17, 2012 in General

Attention Beginners to Grand Prix Riders!
Do you want to know how to improve your horse’s behaviour, performance... or both? Come and see Dr Andrew McLean, internationally acclaimed animal behaviorist, horse trainer and accomplished equestrian competitor, work with Hawkesbury Riding Club (HRC) members and their horses.

This exciting event will take place at 6.00pm on Friday 27 January at Hawkesbury Riding club clubhouse and dressage arenas. The schedule for the evening will be as follows:

Lecture
Andrew will start the evening in the clubhouse with a short lecture on Learning Theory (for which he has a PhD) and how to apply it easily in your horse training. There will be an opportunity to ask questions and pose training issues to Andrew (time constraints may apply). Our own Helen McKay has got in early - Andrew has been pre-briefed on Helen's horse Freddy's kicking behaviour in the float and will discuss this with Helen and the group.

Demonstration
We will then move down to the dressage arenas for two horse/rider demonstrations where we will cover a broad range of behavioural and training issues and objectives: HRC members Maree Gawley and Danielle Leek on their mounts.

Maree will start us off on Mozart, her Warmblood/Thoroughbred cross gelding. Maree would like to address issues such as tension, rushing, inconsistencies to leg aids, kicking out and bucking, crookedness and lack of rhythm and socialisation with other horses (this is a lot so we may not get through all of it!).

Next up will be HRC member and accomplished dressage rider Danielle Leek on Dasimle Mandela Salude. The pair are currently graded Medium and have recently begun competing at Advanced and Prix St Georges Level. Last year they competed at the State Dressage Championships, The Australian Dressage Nationals and were awarded a bronze medal in recognition of their achievement. Andrew will be working with Danielle to show how the system can be used in training the dressage horse and working on some of the more advanced movements.

Bonus
There will be two $1 raffles for Andrew’s best selling books:
1. The Truth About Horses
2. Academic Horse Training
