Australian National Morgan Show

Published on Thursday, April 7, 2011 in General

There aren't very many Morgan horses in Australia - only 300 in fact, however, small numbers haven't deterred the Morgan Horse Association of Australia from holding an Australian National Morgan Show (with a huge program to boot) in Toowoomba Queensland, from 8 - 10 April.

The breed originated in the USA and is still very popular with Americans.  These horses really are the epitome of versatile - in addition to led classes, events at the National Show include everything from English and Western Pleasure, through to Dressage, Showjumping and Harness.  There's even a Silver Buckle Versatility Challenge where entrants may compete in all 7 events or elect only 6 out of the 7 events - with classes including an In Hand Class, Ridden Obstacle Course, Trotting Race (Morgans were a foundation breed for Standardbreds!), Long Reining, Showjumping, Dressage and Long Reining Obstacle Course. Anyone who has read the lovely book 'Justin Morgan Had a Horse', will be familiar with the history of the breed and how they are the foundation for many other breeds, so if you're in the Toowoomba area this Saturday, be sure to go along to their National Show and see the best of Australia's own Morgan horses.
