Baradine & Coonamble Campdrafts Promise Plenty of Action
Horsezone is sponsoring the Baradine Campdraft, which is affiliated with ABCRA and will be run this weekend 26 - 27 May. All is looking good for another great event this year!
Baradine is located just 30 minutes north of Coonabarabran and is considered the gateway to The Pilliga. See link below to find out more about Baradine.
Adrian Worrell, who will be representing Horsezone and competing as well, is currently out droving cattle for the Baradine and Coonamble campdrafts. He says, "Baradine is very popular and good preparation for the huge Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft, which is held over the June long weekend. Baradine received the full nomination of 600 entries and had to knock back entries this year."
"The grounds are in immaculate condition, with new yards built. Baradine has great stock, with a good mixture of black Angus, Hereford and other stock that are on loan from local farmers."
Eveyone is hoping that the cooler weather and rain that is predicted stays away just a bit longer, to help ensure a fantastic weekend of campdrafting!
The big Coonamble Rodeo and Campdraft will be held 9-11 June, with over 1000 different horses competing in a full campdrafting program. The 2000 Coonamble Campdraft hosted the NSW Campdrafting Championships and the National Championships have also been held there in the past.
Horsezone is proud to be sponsoring the Coonamble Campdraft again this year and we are looking forward to some top quality drafting in coming weeks!
What is Campdrafting?
For those of you unfamiliar with the hugely popular sport of campdrafting - not many horse events can boast 600-1000 entries - the ABCRA website states:
Campdrafting involves a mounted rider riding into a "camp" (corral or yard) which has six to eight head of cattle in it. The rider (cuts out) one steer or heifer from the cattle in the camp and brings that beast to the front of the camp and block and turns that beast at least two or three times to prove to the judge that they have the beast under control. The rider then calls for the gates to be opened. The cut out is worth a total of 26 points.
The rider then proceeds to draft (work) the beast around a figure of eight course in a larger arena.
Generally the course is set to the left and once the beast has gone around the left peg, it must then be drafted around a peg on the right.
Once that is completed, the rider then guides the steer through the "gate" which is two pegs placed apart. Once gated, the campdraft is complete and the rider can be awarded up to a total of 100 points. Points are awarded for horsemanship and control of the beast.... within set time limits (usually 45-47 seconds).
Come along to Baradine and Coonamble - and get hooked on campdrafting!
