The Far South Coast National Show has always been seen as one of Southern NSW’s Priemer events. In years gone by it has been “The Event” to compete at. Sadly the years of massive teams and people being able to afford to travel long distances are a thing of the past, however, Bega Show never fails to impress.

Brad Longhurst of Canberra did an amazing job, constantly keeping riders on their toes and the class horses coming out on top. Ann Garner oversaw the judging rolls while Angus Lane boomed over the PA, ably assisted by Brian Manion.  Helen Slater and the team always work so hard to make Bega the best ag show around. Once again rain was an issue, causing plenty of wet horses and riders. The feature event on Friday was the six bar events, sadly over an inch fell while the riders braved the elements. Craig Matthews had a great win, riding Brett Clarke's GH Tigerlilly, while always hungry Grant Hughes was well amongst the mix.

Saturday dawned and so did a beautiful sunny day. Manageable numbers allowed everyone to enjoy the show atmosphere while not having to rush through the day. In the Hack ring Taelar Williams won Supreme Hack of the Show while many other locals had a great day.

In the Showjumping Arena, Jamie Grant took the money in the 1.4m class showing that Cool K loves the Bega grounds. A standout in that class had to be Lane Clarke riding his dad Brett’s horse, GH Tigerlilly, with just one mistake costing him 12 faults. At 13 years of age Lane is the envy of many, young and old, but there was still more to come!

An early night and fireworks a plenty flew over the ground before it was time for day three. Sunday is always big money time at Bega, with the committee consistently putting up great prize money. The day dawned with the prediction of 20-40 mls of rain - not what everyone had hoped for. Most of the classes were run in the dry, then it was time for the Mini Prix and with a clap of thunder and torrential rainfall, the class began. But as they say “The show Must Go On” and on it went, in the most trying of conditions. Neville Cuzner reigned supreme riding the 16 year old mare SS Turbo Rose, while Sandra Kenny was unlucky on Alando, but her number two horse Grandure stepped up to finish second, while Jed Smith was all smiles to take out third place on Country Sunrise.

The rain cleared in time for the Grand Prix, where a wet boggy course was set by Brad and first out to jump was the always reliable Grant Hughes, who went all clear on Yakity Yak and then it was on! Neville Cuzner, Jamie Grant and Clint Beresford also notched up clear in the first rounds. Jamie Smith and Mr Whitter had two down, while local young gun and absolute legend 13 year old Lane Clarke brought the house down to have just eight faults. All were invited back for the second round and all fronted. Lane Clarke went all clear to finish on eight after two rounds and in fifth place, Clint in fourth, on a total of 8 also but fraction quicker, Jamie Grant on four faults was third, Neville Cuzner placed second on four.  The only double clear, leading senior rider, local hero and wonderful Bega Show Supporter, Grant Hughes and Yakity Yak took the win!

What a star the class found in young Lane Clarke - eight faults in a 1.45m+ class in tough wet conditions - Bega looks to be producing another showjumping Superstar!

Thanks to all involved for another great event! Watch this space as the Horsezone team roll onto Canberra Royal, which is kicking off this Wednesday.
