On Sunday 27 April, 28 keen riders gathered at Woodford Showgrounds to learn more about various western events at a Beginner Western Training Day, organised by Woodford AP & I Association.

The training day was subsidised by funds donated by Pine Rivers Western Performance Club in honour of Billie Maundrell’s lifelong involvement in the horse industry. Bille was a founding member and trainer for the Club. Billie passed away in late 2012 and a decision was made last year to disband the Pine Rivers Western Performance Club. To finalise the closure, any funds held had to be distributed and because of their long term association with Billie as a competitor, judge and steward, the funds were donated to the Woodford AP & I Association.

The eager participants were split up into three groups and each group rotated through the three different trainers and disciplines during the day.

The trainers were Annette Kerslake (AQHA Judge) - Trail; Scott Sutton (Reining Trainer/Judge) - Reining; and Shane Massingham (AQHA Judge) Western Pleasure, Horsemanship and Showmanship.

Attendees, who ranged from primary school age children through to adults, enjoyed the trainers' expertise and had an enjoyable day of fun and learning with their horses and friends.

It was a pleasure to watch the participants and see their improvement throughout the day.

At the end of each session, all groups had judged classes for the various events to test their skills. Then Encouragement Awards were given out at the end of the day.

Thank you to the wonderful trainers and also to the sponsors of the day who donated products and services, these included:

  • "K" Bits & Spurs
  • Sutton Reining Horses
  • Rayview Produce
  • East Moreton Branch of ASH
  • Woodford A P & I Association
  • Advertising mediums - Kilcoy Sentinel, The Somerset, Caboolture News and Horsezone.com.au
