This weekend saw a sensational weekend of show jumping at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre. Two days of great competition seeing over 250 riders and their mounts of all ages and abilities competing a full program of events.  To make things even better the weather was a treat, fine, sunny, pleasant conditions.

This is the first time a Grand Prix show jumping event has been held at the Albury Wodonga Equestrian Centre with the Isle of Wight Farm Grand Prix, the highest show jump course competed at AWEC.  If this weekend is indicative of show jumping events to come when Border Districts Show Jump Club moves across the Murray River to call the centre home, then show jumping in the region has a very strong future.

For many out of town showjumpers, this was their first visit to the centre, a number were heard to comment on the quality of the competition surfaces, stabling, yarding and general amenity of the centre.  Several senior riders were even heard to comment “How would the Nationals go here”?

The Border Districts Show Jump Club Spring Show Grand Prix, was the first round of the Isle of Wight Farm Triple Crown series to be competed in North East Victoria over the next several weeks.  Goulburn Valley Show Jump Club will host the rounds two and three to be contested, 21-23 August at Tatura, followed by Euroa 28-30 August.  If this weekend’s competition is any indication of the level of competition to be expected across the series, competition will be tight,  fierce with no quarter given.

Riders gathered from far and wide, some travelling from as far afield as the Canberra, the Southern Highlands of NSW, Gippsland and the Victorian/SA border. The names included Coman, Hearn, Dobbin, Froeche, Johnstone and Lever, just to name a few.  But it was a Young lass, just a slip of a girl from the Mornington Peninsula who stole the show,  Jasmine Dennison 15, a student at Toorak College on Victoria’s Mornington Peninsula placing first and third in the Isle of Wight Farm Grand Prix riding Bubble and Squeak and Nicollosi, second was Brook Dobbin on Silvo, fourth was Russell Johnstone on his mount Borealis Centurion.

Jasmine, coached by the mercurial Laurie Lever from Somerville Victoria has had a stellar eighteen months. Jasmine having a meteoric rise through the ranks winning The Australian Junior Championships, South Australian John Bruggerman Grand Prix and equal first in the South Australian senior championship, She also qualified to represent Australia at the FEI Children’s International Jumping Challenge in Mexico in January of this Year.

Laurie Lever when asked about Jasmine said “She is a very talented great young athlete and student, listens, gives her best and learns quickly”.  Not only did Jasmine demonstrate these qualities this weekend, she also demonstrated maturity, tenacity, courage and a competitive spirit against tough opposition all weekend to come out on top.  Well done Jasmine!
