Club of the Moment: Loxton Horse Riding Club

Published on Wednesday, February 13, 2013 in Clubs

The aim of Loxton Horse Riding Club (LHRC), based in Loxton SA, is to enable horse riding in a safe environment, where instruction can be given on the care of horses and various riding skills in a fun, relaxed and sociable learning environment.

Riders of all ages and all levels of ability, from beginners to advanced are welcome at the Club, which is a very family friendly group with a focus on fun not competition.

That is not to say they don't enjoy a competitive spirit on the right occasion! The club has over 20 full members and is continuing to grow.  The club has been going for six years now and was started by a group of horse loving friends who decided to share the joy.

In addition to horsey activities, the club also volunteers as a group at other community events such as The Murray Man Triathlon.

What sort of people enjoy being members of the Loxton Horse Riding Club?

Everyone! Mothers, fathers, kids, people with young horses, riders from all experience levels.

What breeds of horses are members of your Club?

Standardbreds are popular, so are heavy horse types like clydesdales and percherons, as well as ponies, quarter horses and thoroughbreds - we're not prejudiced!

Which horse sports do your members mostly enjoy?

We like all horse sports! Some of the members love dressage, eventing, showjumping, trail riding, cross country and barrel racing, while others are into harness/driving and miniature horse agility.

What types of events do you run?

The Club holds a games day every year and we had our first dressage day last year, with the most popular event being a novice Freestyle test (in fancy dress). We have various clinics to suit our members needs, from natural horsemanship to showjumping and dressage clinics. We are hoping to have a western clinic this year and a safety and first aid clinic is being planned for both rider and horse. LHRC organised the encouragement ring at the Loxton Show last year and has always had some involvement such as donating trophies and pencillers.

What is the Club's biggest event of the year and why is it special?

Probably the dressage day, as we invite other clubs. This year we will have an interclub challenge with a shield, which will be like a stockman's challenge.

A success stories of the Club?

One of the mums got her teenage son interested in riding again (after he stopped at age eight) and he is now an active riding member – go BOYS!

Any superstars in the Club?

All the mums who have taken up riding (again).

Rising stars in the Club (children or youth riders/competitors)?

All the children who participate fully are amazing!

Future plans for the Club?

Camp this year, interclub challenge, freestyle dressage competition and a mini ODE. We hope to undertake further promotion of club and raise more funds.

How do Club members let their hair down?

We have BBQ lunches on rally days and ride.

What do riders say about the Club?

They are keen to see it grow with lots more members and improvement of facilities, so we can have more varied clinics – harness, natural horsemanship, western pleasure etc. They would like to have more regular meets – informal social rides (swimming, BBQs and treasure hunts). It's a very friendly and laid-back Club, not toffy at all!
