Club of the Moment: Sydney Quarter Horse Association (SQHA)
As part of its commitment to the equestrian industry and horse people from all disciplines, Horsezone offers not-for-profit Equine Clubs or Associations a fundraising opportunity by giving 10% of their listing fees back to registered clubs. In addition Horsezone sponsor throughout Australia and welcome reports and photos from club competitions.
As another reward, Horsezone are have launched a new news segment where we'll profile a club or association that is registered with us monthly, giving Horsezone registered clubs more exposure by promoting interest in their activities and assisting with increasing member numbers.
This month we profile Sydney Quarter Horse Association (SQHA), who hold most of their events at Sugarloaf Equestrian Centre, Cobbitty, NSW. The Sydney Quarter Horse Association was formed to enable owners of all western breed horses in the Sydney region to show their horses at high levels of all aspects of western horsemanship, whether it be western pleasure, trail classes, hunter under saddle, hacking, reining or halter events.
The SQHA holds several shows and clinics throughout the year. This helps beginners to improve their skills and enables experienced riders to keep up with modern trends in the training of their own western horse.
The shows conducted by the SQHA are judged by the best qualified judges available, so that competitors are assured that the standard of competition is maintained at a high level. The association caters for all Western breeds including Appaloosa, Paint, Palouse Pony, Quarter Horses etc, with classes held for each of these categories at all shows.
The SQHA holds three meetings each year, which are open to all members, two general meetings and one annual general meeting, during which the committee is elected by democratic vote.
Recent events for the SQHA include their highly successful Beginner/AA Show Weekend, which was held on 20-21 November. There were 150 competitors over the two days, with 50 competitors for the Beginner Show on Saturday and 100 competitors for the AA Show on Sunday. Judging of the AA Show was handled very capably, considering the large numbers, by Jane Bagley from Texas USA, who was impressed with the turnout. Competitors attended the show from all over NSW and ACT and Horsezone were proud sponsors of the shows. CLICK HERE to read Horsezone's report on the weekend.

The next big SQHA show is a multiple judge AA Show being held on 20-21 February 2011, at Cobbitty. This show will be run in conjunction with Southern NSW and ACT Quarter Horse Club and competitors have the chance of winning four times normal points! Each class will be judged by two judges who are not able to talk and must place competitors as they see fit – they may agree or have totally different views. It will be interesting to see if the judges place competitors in the same order! This method of judging will be a first for NSW. The program will be available from the SQHA website in coming weeks.
