Clydesdale and Heavy Horse Festival

Equine enthusiasts are expected to flock to Wyndham this weekend for the annual Clydesdale and Heavy Horse Festival at Werribee Park.

The event on Saturday and Sunday offers a chance to get close to some of Australia's great heavy horses.

Breeds including Clydesdales, shires, the rare Suffolk punch chestnuts, Percherons and Friesians will compete in various categories during the two-day event.

Working pony breeds such as Gypsy cobs, Highlands and Fjords will also feature.

Harness horses will be turned out in various "delivery" events, featuring dairy, butcher and bakery carts. plus four-wheel vehicles powered by teams of two or four horses.

Farming and ploughing methods of bygone years will be demonstrated by the Victorian Working Draft Horse Association using vintage implements.

There will also be a demonstration of vintage firefighting equipment and working draft competitions. Other events include log snigging, sleds, displays of original and restored working vehicles and a hay-raking demonstration.

Judging begins at 9am on both days. The event will be held at the Werribee Park National Equestrian Centre, 170 K Road, Werribee South.

Entry is $12 for adults; children free.
