Colthaga a Class of Her Own

Published on Sunday, February 27, 2011 in General

The Aussie showjumpers have landed and are already showing they're here for business..

Jamie Kermond and his lovely grey mare Colthaga were all class today (Sunday) on his way to victory in the three star grand prix at the Woodhill Sands Show.

The 25-year-old, who rode for his country at the World Equestrian Games in 2006, is here to ride Katie McVean's horses at the series showjumping finals next weekend, and his own horse at the 2011 Horse of the Year Show in mid March. McVean has headed to Europe to settle her horse in before the World Cup final in April but will be home for Horse of the Year.

Today, he looked to be very dangerous as he rode a perfect clear round in an extremely tight time to take the honours.

He was one of six who started in the jump-off of the main class at the show. Ahead of him Catherine Cameron (Cambridge) and Kahurangi Valentino had laid a brilliant challenge but in the end it was Kermond's tight turns that gave him the nod over the Roger La Planche (Timaru) designed course.

Paula Mussen (Auckland) and Meersbrook Flintstone were the last combination to go in the jump-off and while they gave it their all, came up just hundredths of a second short. They placed second, with Cameron third, Tess Williams (Gisborne) and Alltech Craighaven Nitro fourth and Lucy Akers (Mystery Creek) on Tinapai fifth. Cameron was sixth on her other mount Kahurangi Tardak.
