Craig Barrett wins Melbourne CCI3*

Published on Tuesday, June 14, 2011 in General

Craig Barrett jumped a beautiful clear round on Wendela Jamie (pictured) to move up from third place and win the class.

"You are only as good as your horse and this horse is a superstar," said Craig in his acceptance speech. Thank you to Helan and Henry Hicks who have stuck by me, this horse has had some ups and downs but they've stayed supportive the whole time."  Craig said that there is a great system supporting Aussie riders and that "we are going places!"

Craig acknowledged the great support for the class as well as him self by Bates. A nice finish for Craig and wife Prue, Australian Eventing National Performance Director.  London may be a campaign close to Prue's heart if Craig continues this form!

Emma Mason had the last fence down on F1 Pharinelli, giving overnight leader Shane Rose  (who was on an equal score but was leading due to being closer to the optimum time on XC) a little breathing room.  However, it definatley wasn't Shane's day when Taurus knocked 5 rails to drop to 15th. Emma finished 2nd,  Alice Montgomery (NZL) had one rail on the experienced Gordon but it was good enough for 3rd place making their trip across the Tasman worthwhile.

Stuart Tinney was as cool as usuual in the arena and guided Orchard Hill to a clear round to move up to 4th place. Two rails for Nat Blundell put her and Algebra in 5th and Tallara Barwick enjoyed a good clear round on the lovely 17-year-old Chief Justice to finish 6th.

Katja Weimann won the CCI2* on BP Cosmopolitan with a clear round moving her up from 2nd place.  Overnight leaders Christine Bates and Delago hadtwo fences down. "I made one mistake and he made one as well, but I am really pleased with how he went all weekend, " said Christine.  The pair finished 2nd. Jade Findlay and Bloomers Twinkletoes moved up from 9th to 3rd with a great clear round. In 4th place was Christine again on Adelaide Hill, with one rail.  Full CCI2* report to come.

The IRT CCI1* got off to an early start again this morning, trotting up at 7am. The notable omission from the CCI2* trot up was 2nd placed Lauren Balcomb on Kootamootoo Lauren did not present “Koots” as he was running a fever last night. We wish him a speedy recovery.

The 1-star jumping started at 8.30am. For some reason the Werribee indoor adds a degree of difficulty greater than that of the Sydney indoor and as expected the lower end of the CCI1* struggled around the course. The first clear round came from Lucy Bennett-Funnell on her smart jumping horse Venture Beyond. Of the 40 horses into the arena there were just 14 clear rounds. In the top 10 there was disappointment for 9th placed Sophie Adams on Mercator du Ry who was eliminated after two uncharacteristic stops on course. Brett Davies and Goolcoola Montage suffered two expensive rails for dropped them from 4th to 7th.
A clear round moved Mattea Davidson (Qld) up from 9th to 6th on Fairbanks Cargo ,Victoria’s  Cass Webb had one rail on Dutch Determination but remained in 5th whilst Will Enzinger’s clear round on Wyuna Clear Image improved his position from 7th into 4th. Will also claimed 3rd place on Ruban Son.
Cooper Oborn (SA) jumped well to retain 2nd place on Sun Showers whilst Amanda Ross used her experience to jump a lovely clear round on the Michelle Clough’s 6-year-old chestnut gelding William Wordsworth to win the class on their Dressage score.
