Teenage showjumper rider Gemma Creighton (pictured) has returned from New Zealand victorious, after competing in the bi-annual Young Rider competition as part of the Queensland team.

Gemma and her team beat the New Zealand side in two out of the three rounds of competition over the weekend, at the event held in Dannevirke, north of Wellington.

Using a borrowed horse for the international competition, Gemma jumped clear in five out of six rounds.  The event was Gemma’s seventh consecutive competition selection, her first being at 15.

“It’s a very prestigious and high quality event. They only have this twice a year and I’ve been going since I was little,” Creighton said.

Being a seasoned professional, Gemma didn’t let nerves get the better of her.

“It’s always a really fun competition and I enjoy them because I’ve done it so many times and I can just really get into it,” she said.

Tipped as one of Australia’s top young riders, it’s a championship title she is proud to hold onto. With only two international events each year, the overseas competition is fierce between the up and comers.

“There are a lot of young riders that you see at these competitions that go on to compete in top class events.” She said.

Having already clocked up several championship wins against the Kiwis, Gemma and her team could not have asked for a better result and are extremely pleased to be able to retain the shield trophy they worked so hard for.

“There are four of us in the Queensland team. At the end of the competition the winner gets to bring home the shield trophy. We currently have it and we don’t want to leave it in New Zealand. I want that trophy!” she said.

Gemma’s father Guy Creighton, who competed in the Montreal and the Los Angeles Olympics joined his daughter in New Zealand and coached at the event.
