EQUITANA - Congratulations to Greg Powell - Winner of The Way Of The Horse

On Sunday 13 November, Horse Handler Greg Powell won The Way Of The Horse at Equitana in front of thousands of spectators at Sydney Olympic Park.

The Way of the Horse is a pressure test over three-days.  Greg was just one of three Australian leading horse trainers who demonstrated their specialised skills in starting young horses.  All three of the trainers were able to successfully ride a previously unhandled 2-year-old horse in three days.  This feat was accomplished in only 75 minutes each day, under very strict rules about how much time each trainer could spend with the horse.

These trainers demonstrated to an enthralled audience that through consistent language you can gentle a horse over a short time to do amazing things.

Greg Powell was able to ride ‘Coolidowns Cascade’ (the chosen horse) through an obstacle course to the rousing applause of a packed stadium.

Greg had unusual motivations for agreeing to take part in this competition.  He wanted to promote his charity.  “I wanted people to be aware of my charity the Kalandan Foundation, where I use these methods to change the lives Brumbies and young people”

Brumbies and troubled youth are considered a nuisance.  The Brumbies are taken from the Guy Faulkes National Park where they are damaging the National Park.  The young people he works with have come from broken homes, homeless, involved in drugs or in trouble with the law.  At the end of the camps, Greg sees an amazing transformation in both Brumbies and the young people.

Greg is passionate about young people and brumbies, “Young people with passive aggressive behaviours start to listen to you when they are interested in what you are doing.  When you can show them how to do something ‘cool’ with wild horses they want to be involved.”

So impressed were the Coolidowns stud that they donated their stockhorse, ‘Coolidowns Cascade’ to Kalandan Foundation so that Greg can continue his work with this wonderful gelding.

Kalandan Foundation desperately needs money for Greg to continue his life passion and transform the lives of young people and wild brumbies www.kalandanfoundation.com.au
