Horsezone Highlight

Our highlight for today has been listening to all the great training sessions being held in the Gippsland Premium Arena, which is right near our stand, as well as chatting to even more of our loyal clients about their success with using Horsezone.

Off the Track Show Horse Gala

A lovely selection of horses were presented to the judges for the Off the Track Show Horse Gala. The winner was DP Destiny (Samantha McMaster), while Chosen One (Shae Hanger) placed second and third went to Superzeel (Tammy Notman).

Phil Webb Starting a Cutting Horse on Cattle

Phil Webb explained the benefits of using a mechanical cow as opposed to real cattle when starting a cutting horse. Compared starting a cutting horse to starting a child in gymnastics - you can't go for speed until you can do everything correctly slowly and it's extremely important not to put too much pressure on them too soon. He stressed that collection is very important for a cutting horse and with their hocks right under them. Waiting for the cow, not trying to beat the cow is essential. The goal is to keep the horse happy and be as kind as possible so that they don't get resentful. Be natural and free with the horse. VIEW PHOTOS HERE

Supreme Products Equestrienne Turnout

More gorgeous show horses strutted their stuff for the judges, who included Charlotte Dujardin, in the Supreme Products Equestrienne Turnout. The winner of this event was Rose McEvoy riding Towering Inferno (owned by Lillian McEvoy), second went to Heidi Pickstock riding DP Amazing, while third went to Kristin White and The Russian (owned by Georgie Kellock). Choose the Right Horse for YOU

Pick the right horse for the right job you want it to do ie: the sport or pastime you partake in. Think about who you are and what your requirements are when considering the purchase of a new horse. For example if you are a high energy person an Arabian would probably suit you. Be sure to choose a horse that is of a suitable breed and has the right conformation, temperament and movement for what you want to do - a Warmblood will never do western pleasure just as a Quarter Horse wouldn't be able to excel at grand prix dressage.

TWOTH: Challenge II

Challenge II of The Way Of The Horse has been completed. Competitors saddled their horses and started the process of backing them today. VIEW PHOTOS HERE

Russell Johnstone Jumping Training

A question that Russell is always asked while teaching around the country is how do you get a good take off for a jump. It's so important to get the take off correct and Russell had a good crowd of spectators listening for his tips for a good take off, such as looking at something past the fence. Judy Harvey Dressage Training – Shoulder In

Inernationally renowned Dressage instructor and trainer Judy Harvey chose a lovely Friesian stallion for Bonny Kingsley to ride to demonstrate shoulder in and the start of walk pirouette. Walk pirouettes and shoulder ins go very closely together. Shoulder in is an exercise ridden on three tracks. Shoulder in is one of the key most important exercises we have in dressage today. It is used as an exercise in its own right to set up half passes, walk pirouettes and canter pirouettes. You can even use shoulder in to ride straight up the centre line - if your horse has at twist in his body, use shoulder in to correct him. Shoulder in is an imazingly small angle when ridden correctly. It increases engagement and aids the development of collection by bringing the horses hind leg underneath its body. Shoulder in is a really good exercise for developing collection and is highly beneficial in all training, even for grand prix horses. To get the correct angle for shoulder in - line up the horses inside hip to the outside rein and the outside shoulder and this help you keep the weight down into your right leg.
