Canadian Olympic equestrian champion Eric Lamaze has added three new horses to his stable as he prepares for the 2012 Summer Games.
Lamaze, of Schomberg, Ontario, lost his prized horse Hickstead in November when the 15-year-old Dutch Warmblood died after an event in Verona, Italy. Lemaze and Hickstead won the gold medal in the individual event at the 2008 Olympics and helped Canada win a silver in the team competition. They were favourites to be in the medal hunt again this summer in London.
On Monday, Lamaze announced his potential replacements — Verdi, Luikka and Derly Chin de Muze.
“There is still a long way to go before London, but these are the three horses that we are targeting towards the Olympic Games,” said Lamaze, 43. “Losing Hickstead was obviously very difficult, but with these new horses, the Olympics can now very much be a reality again. I am really excited for the future.”
