ESNZ Welcomes Increased High Performance Funding
Changes to ESNZ’s High Performance Programme over the past two years have been acknowledged by SPARC with a significant increase in High Performance investment until 2012 announced Friday.
ESNZ’s HP investment for the next 2 year period will increase by the largest percentage of any sport. ESNZ HP Director, Sarah Harris, welcomed the increased funding noting “the ESNZ HP programme is robust in terms of leadership and result focus and the extra funds will ensure the sport does whatever is required to bridge the gap to the Olympic podium by London 2012”.
Eventing HP investment will rise from $525k (received in 2009 & 2010) to $900k in 2011 and $1m in 2012. This is a major increase and reflects both improved Eventing results in 2010 (including bronze medals at WEG) and also SPARC's faith in the new direction ESNZ has implemented within the HP programme. These funds can only be expended on activity which impacts on Eventing's medal winning capability for the London Olympics in 2012.
ESNZ also welcomes the return of investment to Showjumping with the performances of leading riders at Kentucky convincing SPARC to invest $50k in the process of qualification to the London Olympics via the regional Olympic qualifier in Germany, July 2011.
ESNZ will also receive significant levels of investment in service credits for use by elite riders with the NZ Academy of Sport, Performance Enhancement Grants and PM Scholarships.
Jim Ellis, ESNZ Chief Executive, reflected positively on the funding outcome, “ESNZ’s more robust approach to High Performance has been vindicated both by results in 2010 and now by increased SPARC investment for which the sport is very grateful. Both Eventing and Showjumping must continue to improve their elite performances to justify the new funding levels and ESNZ’s HP team will work closely with our leading riders, horses, coaches and owners to achieve this aim”.
SPARC will no longer invest in Eventing’s Talent Development 2016 Squad which will require ESNZ to consider alternative solutions to maintain this invaluable programme.
