Greg Powell - The Horse Handler

Published on Wednesday, February 2, 2011 in General

Greg Powell has made a career out of building partnerships with horses and enjoys nothing more than passing on his skills to others.

Having worked with horses since he was a boy, Greg has gained a wealth of experience and knowledge in the art of building lasting relationships with horses. Greg has come to believe and agrees that a special relationship with a horse can only be achieved through mutual trust and understanding and not fear and intimidation. Greg has been influenced by the likes of Ray Hunt, Buck Brannaman, Pat Parelli, John Lyons, Kel Jeffrey and others.

Greg has appeared in many feature magazine and newspaper articles and on numerous radio and television shows. He has also appeared at a huge number of field days, horse events, clinics and other media related live events, demonstrating his horse handling skills with 'Snowy the Brumby Mare', 'Sammy the Arab' and 'Bruce the Kelpie'! The live shows are both entertaining and educational, combining Greg's natural 'on-stage' ability with his energetic horse handling skills.

2002 saw Greg's first documentary Snowy/Wild horses of the Tinderry ranges go to air on Channel 9. The Snowy DVD was the beginning of an interesting though sometimes testing journey. Then in 2004 the Wild Kids/Wild horses documentary was completed with Greg's mate Jack Thompson, which also aired on Channel 9. It was aired in France on the Equida Channel and Greg was asked to travel to France to present horsemanship clinics, which proved to be an amazing experience. After France  Greg was busy presenting clinics and demonstrations all over Australia, as well as working with troubled kids. Greg is very committed to the work he carries out with troubled youth, which is why he developed a charity called The Kalandan Foundation and works extensively with troubled youth.

When EI crippled the horse industry in 2007, Greg took a job on a 10,000 acre property called Coolah Creek, where he spent many months mustering and doing sheep and cattle work, which proved trying but rewarding.

In 2008 The Kalandan Foundation received endorsement from the Australian Government as a PBI (Public Benevolent Institution) and this status gives the charity full tax deductibility on gifts.

Greg's work is now focussed on teaching troubled youth life skills through interaction with Australian wild horses/Brumbies and conducting horsemanship clinics at his property located at Carrick, near Marulan in NSW.
